Reports

background

After the Belgian Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with three points ahead of Mark Webber and with 31 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel . Red Bull-Renault led the constructors' championship with one point ahead of McLaren-Mercedes and with 80 points ahead of Ferrari .

The Italian Grand Prix was held for the 60th time in 2010 as part of the Formula 1 World Championship at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza.

With Michael Schumacher (five times), Rubens Barrichello (three times), Fernando Alonso and Vettel (once each), four former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

training

In the first free practice session, Jenson Button secured the lead ahead of Vettel and Hamilton. Paul di Resta was deployed for Adrian Sutil at Force India -Mercedes . In the second free practice session, Vettel set the fastest lap ahead of Ferrari drivers Alonso and Felipe Massa . In the third free practice session, Hamilton took the lead in front of Vettel and Alonso.

Qualifying

In the first section of qualifying, Massa set the fastest time. The HRT , Virgin and Lotus pilots as well as Vitantonio Liuzzi were eliminated. In the second segment of the qualification, Alonso took over the leadership position. The Sauber and Toro Rosso pilots as well as Vitali Petrow , Schumacher and Sutil were eliminated. In the third section, Alonso retained the top position and achieved the first pole position for Ferrari of the season. Button finished second ahead of Massa.

run

Fernando Alonso was on the grid, ahead of Jenson Button and Felipe Massa

At the start of the Italian Grand Prix, Alonso lost the lead to Button. He also had to defend his second place against his teammate Massa. Behind the two Ferrari drivers, Hamilton tried to drive past Massa before the variant della Roggia . There was a contact, his right front wheel touched the side of the Ferrari from Massa. The suspension broke and Hamilton had to finish the race in the gravel. For Kamui Kobayashi , the race was also over on the first lap. After starting from the pit lane due to technical problems, he had to park the car after a short time with transmission problems.

While the three leading drivers pulled away, a group formed behind them, in which there should be battles for positions in the race. After a good start, Nico Rosberg was in fourth place ahead of Robert Kubica , Nico Hülkenberg , Vettel, Schumacher and Webber. Webber, who started the race from fourth place, had the worst start from the front runners. He also made the first overtaking maneuver in this group, in which he passed Schumacher. The Mercedes pilot tried to counter but couldn't get past Webber again.

While Bruno Senna had to park his car with technical problems, a duel between Alonso and Button developed at the front. Alonso did not attempt to overtake, but he managed to regularly put his opponent under pressure with fast lap times. Button, however, prevented Alonso from getting too close with fast lap times. Massa always kept a few seconds behind the two leaders, but never completely lost touch.

In the 21st lap, Webber also passed his teammate. On the straight in front of Parabolica , Vettel could not exploit the potential of his car and Webber drove past him. Vettel reported engine problems to the pits and drove a few laps a little slower than Webber. After a few laps, however, Vettel set the lap times of Webber again and the problem no longer existed. Even after the end of the race, Red Bull still had no explanation for the drop in performance for a few laps.

In the meantime, an ambulance had to pits because Sakon Yamamoto injured a mechanic during the pit stop. He was given the signal too early to drive off and drove the mechanic who was working on the right rear wheel down. HRT was fined $ 20,000 after the race. After the pit lane was clear again, some pilots completed their pit stop, which resulted in some postponements. Kubica lost a few seconds during the pit stop and fell behind Webber. Rosberg defended his position before Hulkenberg. Vettel decided to make his pit stop as late as possible in order to make up places with a different strategy.

At the top, Button was the first pilot to pit. The Ferrari pit crew was also ready to stop, but neither Alonso nor Massa made their stop. The Spaniard stayed out for one more lap and was able to pass Button with a good lap and a quick stop in the duel out of the pit lane. Massa stayed out for two more laps in which he was in the lead and then took third place again.

Felipe Massa drove to third place

Behind the leading pilots, Webber tried several times to drive past Hulkenberg. The duel also got a special meaning, as Vettel in fourth place with good lap times increased his lead over the drivers who had already made their pit stop. After Jarno Trulli had to park his racing car with technical problems, Webber managed to drive past Hülkenberg. Nevertheless, he finished the race behind Vettel, who pitted on the penultimate lap to have his tires changed. Vettel's strategy worked and he kept fourth position until the end of the race.

In the end, Alonso won the race ahead of Button and Massa. It was his third win of the season. The three leaders were almost half a minute ahead of the rest of the field. Rosberg was fifth ahead of Webber, Hülkenberg and Kubica. The other points went to Schumacher and Barrichello.

In the drivers' world championship, Webber took over the lead from Hamilton again. Alonso improved to third place thanks to the win. Among the designers, Red Bull-Renault kept the top position ahead of McLaren-Mercedes.
