Reports

background

After the Monaco Grand Prix , Mark Webber led the drivers' standings with equal points from Sebastian Vettel and three points from Fernando Alonso . Red Bull-Renault led the constructors' championship with 20 points ahead of Ferrari and 27 points ahead of McLaren-Mercedes .

Vettel contested his 50th Grand Prix at the Turkish Grand Prix.

With Felipe Massa (three times) and Jenson Button (once) two former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

Scuderia Ferrari celebrated its 800th racing anniversary in the 827th Grand Prix.

training

In the first free practice session, McLaren-Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap ahead of his team-mate Button by almost a second. Michael Schumacher came in third . For the first time this season, Sakon Yamamoto was allowed to take part in training for HRT-Cosworth as a Friday test driver. In the second free practice, Button took the lead in front of the Red Bull-Renault from Webber and Vettel.

A curious scene arose after Webber's failure, who stayed on the track shortly before the end of training. He used the sloping stretch to reverse into an exit. Webber then tried to signal the marshals with a hand signal that they should put something behind his wheels, as the car had no handbrake. After the marshals did not understand what the Australian wanted and had misunderstood his hand signals several times, the marshals finally put a fire extinguisher behind the right front wheel after spectators standing behind a fence had interfered.

In the third free practice session, Vettel replaced the leading McLaren drivers and achieved the fastest lap ahead of Nico Rosberg and Hamilton.

Qualifying

In the first part of the qualification, Vettel achieved the fastest lap, like in the third free practice session. The HRT, Virgin and Lotus pilots as well as Vitantonio Liuzzi were eliminated. In the second qualifying segment, Vettel kept the top position. The Williams and Toro Rosso pilots as well as de la Rosa , Alonso and Sutil were eliminated. In the final section of qualifying, Webber secured his third pole position in a row ahead of Hamilton and Vettel. Schumacher flew off on his last lap, stayed in the gravel trap and triggered a yellow phase that made it impossible for the drivers who were on the track to improve.

run

At the start of the Turkish Grand Prix, Webber retained the leading position. Both McLaren drivers lost a position. Hamilton lost second place to Vettel and Button had to give up fourth position to Schumacher. However, both managed to return to their original position within the first lap. In the back of the field there was contact between Nico Hülkenberg and Sébastien Buemi , after which both had to go into the pits for repairs.

At the top, Webber was unable to break away from Hamilton. However, the British did not manage to overtake. Vettel was about two seconds behind the two in third place. He was the first pilot in the leading quartet to pit on lap 14 to change tires. One lap later, Webber and Hamilton also made their pit stop. Since Webber went first, Hamilton had to wait a little longer in the pits and lost the decisive seconds in the fight for second place, which Vettel took over. After Button, who had meanwhile taken the lead, also changed tires, the Red Bull duo led the field, led by Webber.

Hamilton first tried to pass Vettel, but was unsuccessful. While the first four drivers were within three seconds, the gap between the Mercedes drivers Schumacher and Rosberg grew larger and larger. Robert Kubica positioned himself behind the two of them , who complained by radio about the slow Rosberg, but couldn't get past him.

On the 32nd lap, Lotus driver Jarno Trulli was the first to drop out. One lap later, his team-mate Heikki Kovalainen also had to finish the race. The two racing drivers had initially shown a good performance, but then both dropped out with hydraulic problems.

While all the pilots were waiting for rain, Vettel increased the pressure on Webber. Vettel was faster than Webber at this point in the race and was able to stay with Webber when accelerating out onto the Gerage after Turn 10. After the eleventh turn he positioned himself to the left of him. When Vettel had already passed Webber, the two racing cars collided and spun off the track. The race was over for Vettel, Webber had to pits for a repair stop.

Both pilots blamed the other for the collision. Vettel said: “The situation was pretty clear. If you look at the TV pictures, I was lying on the inside, so I had priority for the following curve. I only focused on braking. Then it took a blow and the race was over. Suddenly I lost control of the car. It hurts. ” Webber, however, saw his teammate's fault and said after the race: “ Sebastian had a good lead at top speed and he went inside. We were lying side by side and then it looks like he turned right pretty quickly and we touched. I didn't expect him to pull over to the right. It happened so quickly. Of course, I didn't want a collision there at this speed. ” While Red Bull team boss Christian Horner and Red Bull motorsport representative Helmut Marko Webber blamed the collision, Hamilton and Rosberg as well as former racing drivers saw them like Martin Brundle , David Coulthard , Christian Danner , Anthony Davidson and JJ Lehto blame Vettel.

In the race, McLaren benefited from the collision and took the lead with Hamilton in first place and Button in second place. Webber came back on track in third place because he had a bigger lead over the Mercedes duo. Although heavier rain was initially announced, it only rained so lightly that no pilot had to switch to intermediates .

At the top, the next team-internal duel developed between Button and Hamilton and Button briefly took the lead after an overtaking maneuver in the target curve. Hamilton countered on the start-finish straight and took the lead again after the first corner. Button was then instructed to save more fuel and watch out for his tires. As a result, he stopped attacking Hamilton.

After HRT driver Bruno Senna had to park his racing car twelve laps before the end with problems with the fuel supply, there were still changes in the points. First, Sutil passed Kamui Kobayashi and took tenth place in the meantime. After Alonso had put pressure on Vitali Petrov for several rounds , he attacked him in the 54th round. The two touched and Petrow's tire was damaged. Petrow had to pit again for a tire change and thus fell out of the points. He then achieved his first fastest lap in Formula 1 with new tires on lap 57 with a time of 1: 29.165 minutes.

After Chandhok gave up the race with a defect in the fuel pump in the pits and was still classified as the last pilot, Hamilton was the first to cross the finish line and scored the first victory of the season ahead of his teammate Button. Webber saved third place, 24 seconds behind the finish line. Schumacher finished in fourth place ahead of Rosberg, Kubica, Massa and Alonso. The other points went to Sutil and Kobayashi, who scored the first point of the season for Sauber-Ferrari .

In the World Cup, Webber retained the lead in front of Hamilton and Button, who had made up both positions. In the constructors' championship, McLaren-Mercedes took the lead from Red Bull-Renault.
