The 2010 Canadian Grand Prix took place on June 13th at the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal and was the eighth race of the 2010 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

After the Turkish Grand Prix , Mark Webber led the drivers' standings with five points ahead of Jenson Button and nine points ahead of Lewis Hamilton . McLaren-Mercedes led the constructors' championship with one point ahead of Red Bull-Renault and with 26 points ahead of Ferrari .

With Michael Schumacher (seven times), Fernando Alonso , Hamilton and Robert Kubica (once each), four former winners competed for this Grand Prix.

training

In the first free practice, Button achieved the fastest lap time ahead of Schumacher and his McLaren team-mate Hamilton. In the second free practice session, Sebastian Vettel took the lead in front of Alonso and Nico Rosberg . In the third free practice, Hamilton was the fastest driver ahead of Webber and Alonso.

Qualifying

In the first section of qualifying, Hamilton posted the fastest lap. The HRT , Virgin and Lotus pilots and Kamui Kobayashi were eliminated. In the second segment, Hamilton retained the top position. The Toro Rosso and Williams pilots as well as Pedro de la Rosa , Vitali Petrow and Schumacher were eliminated. In the final section of qualifying, Hamilton set another best time and secured pole position ahead of Webber and Vettel. This is the first time that Red Bull Racing has not achieved pole position this season.

At the end of qualifying, Hamilton caused a stir when he purposely parked his car on the run-off lap. McLaren had instructed its driver to take this action because he had to save fuel in order to keep the required kilograms of fuel in the tank in the end. The race stewards penalized Hamilton for this action with a warning and a fine of 10,000 US dollars .

run

The Canadian Grand Prix was characterized by different pit stop strategies. From the leading group, the Red Bull Renault drivers were the only ones who started the race on hard tires. Hamilton decided the start for himself and kept the lead in front of Vettel and Alonso. Felipe Massa collided with Vitantonio Liuzzi and de la Rosa also had to pits for repairs after a collision with Petrov. All four pilots continued the race. This did not apply to Kobayashi, initially he collided on the Wall of Champions and knocked off the front wing of his BMW Sauber and then had to give up the race entirely.

After Webber had passed Button on the fourth lap, Rosberg began the regular pit stops one lap later. Since the soft tires were no longer intact for most of the drivers, the racing drivers who started on soft tires all had to pit shortly afterwards. The Red Bull benefited from this and took over the lead of the race, led by Vettel. Hamilton lost one position to Alonso in the pits. The hard tires didn't last much longer, however, and so the drivers with hard tires also had to make their pit stops. When Schumacher came out of the pit, he came into contact with Kubica. Both could continue without damage.

Sébastien Buemi was in the lead for the first time in his Formula 1 career

While the Red Bull made their pit stop, a duel between Alonso and Hamilton developed. After Sébastien Buemi had taken the lead for the first time in his Formula 1 career, Hamilton attacked Alonso and pulled past his former teammates. Since Buemi pitted, Hamilton took over the lead of the race. After 13 laps, the race was over for Bruno Senna , who had transmission problems.

At the top, Hamilton could not break away from Alonso, and Button, Vettel and Webber, who occupied places three to five, were within striking distance of the top group. On lap 26, Alonso took over the lead of the race. On the straight in front of the pit lane, he tried to overtake Hamilton, but did not have to exert himself as the Briton came to the pits. A lap later, a dangerous situation between Kubica and Adrian Sutil took place at the same point . The two dueled and Kubica pulled just past Sutil to go to the pits. One lap later, Sutil pitted with a puncture.

After two laps in the lead, Alonso came into the pits and Webber took over the lead of the race, as Vettel had already stopped. Alonso came back on track between Hamilton and Button. Meanwhile, the race was over for de la Rosa after 30 laps. He stopped in front of the Wall of Champions with an engine failure. At the top, Hamilton continuously caught up with Webber. Webber's real rival, his team-mate Vettel, was also able to shorten the gap. After Hamilton and Alonso caught up with Webber and Hamilton drove past him, Webber pitted to change tires. He fell behind his teammates.

After Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock had to give up due to technical problems, Button took second place from Alonso. The McLaren driver had continuously caught up with the Ferrari driver, but couldn't get past. When Alonso was stopped while lapping Karun Chandhok , Button took the opportunity to overtake.

Lewis Hamilton (front) celebrated another one-two for McLaren with Jenson Button

After Buemi had passed Schumacher, Massa, who had overtaken a few pilots in the race, also tried to pass his former teammate, but the German pushed Massa a bit and Massa had to pits for repair work with a defective front wing. Because he drove too fast in the pit lane during this pit stop, he received a 20-second time penalty after the race. However, this did not change his result.

After Kubica had set the fastest race lap, Hamilton was the first to cross the finish line. Button made a one-two for McLaren with a second place. Alonso was third with almost half a minute ahead of Vettel and Webber. The remaining points went to Rosberg, Kubica, Buemi, Liuzzi and Sutil. Schumacher, who had started the last lap in ninth place, had to let himself be overtaken by both Force India on the last lap and crossed the finish line in eleventh place outside of the points.

In the World Championship, Hamilton took the lead from Webber, who finished third behind Button. In the constructors' championship, McLaren-Mercedes was able to further extend its lead over Red Bull-Renault with a one-two result.
