background
After Jackie Stewart had secured the drivers 'world title two weeks earlier at the Italian Grand Prix , the main focus during the remaining two races in North America was on the constructors' title. The lead in this classification had changed several times between Tyrrell and Lotus in the course of the previous Grand Prix . For this reason, Tyrrell planned to compete in Canada with three works cars. Since Patrick Depailler, who was actually the third driver, could not compete due to a motorcycle accident, Chris Amon was hired at short notice , who was available because his previous team, Tecno, no longer competed.
Jacky Ickx had left Scuderia Ferrari for good, so, as has already been done several times this season, they started with just one car, which was driven by Arturo Merzario .
Jody Scheckter returned to the McLaren team as the third works driver for the last two races of the season . He was the first driver in Formula 1 history to be given the starting number "0".
In BRM was Clay Regazzoni from Peter Gethin represented, which thus came to his only GP-use this year. The second car in Frank Williams' team , which was rented out to paying guest starters as usual, was driven by Tim Schenken , for whom this was also the only appearance this season.
training
For the eighth time this year, Ronnie Peterson qualified for pole position. His fastest training lap he completed over a second faster than the runner-up Peter Revson . Behind them Jody Scheckter and Carlos Reutemann formed the second row, while the two duelists for second place in the drivers' championship, Emerson Fittipaldi and François Cevert , qualified for the third row.
run
When it rained on race day, Peterson took the lead from Scheckter and Niki Lauda , who had an excellent start from eighth place. Fittipaldi was initially fourth ahead of Stewart, Reutemann and Revson.
In the third round, Lauda managed to take the lead. Behind them, Peterson and Scheckter were battling it out for second place until the Swede had an accident on lap 17 due to a suspension damage. A little later, Scheckter fell behind Fittipaldi. He took the lead when Lauda had to make a pit stop to have his tires changed. Jackie Oliver and François Cevert were second and third at that time.
After Cevert and Scheckter collided in the battle for third place on lap 33, a safety car was sent out onto the track for the first time in Formula 1 history . This first outing was quite chaotic because Eppie Wietzes , who drove the Porsche 914 , did not sit in front of the leader, but in front of Howden Ganley , who was eighth . The vehicles in front of him had the opportunity to catch up for almost a whole lap or to gain a corresponding lead. As a result, after the four laps of the safety car phase, Jackie Oliver was in the lead ahead of Peter Revson and Jean-Pierre Beltoise . As Revson had the most competitive car of the three rivals at his disposal, he quickly took the lead, while Fittipaldi steadily caught up with the top trio and finally moved up to second in the final laps.
The race management was overwhelmed with the mess. The lap counting tables had to be evaluated for several hours so that the official race result could only be announced in the evening.
Peter Revson won a Grand Prix for the second and final time after winning the British Grand Prix for the first time this season. Jackie Oliver achieved the last of two podium finishes during his Formula 1 career. He achieved the first at the 1968 Mexican Grand Prix .
