The 2015 Canadian Grand Prix (officially the Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada 2015 ) took place on June 7th on the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal and was the seventh race of the 2015 Formula 1 World Championship .

report

backgrounds

After the Monaco Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings by ten points over Nico Rosberg and 28 points over Sebastian Vettel . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with 84 points and Williams with 161 points .

At the Canadian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow) and P Zero Supersoft (red), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

Before the race, it was revealed that Ferrari and Honda were using more advanced versions of their engines when racing. Ferrari used three of the tokens still available for this . The Sauber customer team still competed with the old engine version and should not receive the further developed engines until the Belgian Grand Prix in August. In addition to changes made in terms of reliability, Honda invested two of the available tokens in a revision of the hybrid system.

Manor Marussia entered the Canadian Grand Prix for the first time with sponsor logos on the vehicles, before the race Airbnb was introduced as the new sponsor.

Compared to the previous year, minor changes were made to the route. In the run-off zone of turn 10 , the road boundaries and the safety fences were renewed, and there and in turn 12, the guardrails were replaced by walls on both sides of the route. Poles were set up in the exit zone of the chicane in front of the start and finish straight. Here the pilots have to follow a given route in case they brake in front of the chicane . There had been several discussions in the past because drivers had gained an advantage by skipping the chicane.

There were two DRS zones that remained unchanged compared to the previous year. The first zone began after the pits hairpin , exactly 55 meters before the next full throttle curve. The second zone was on the start-and-finish straight and began 70 meters after the last corner. Just like at the season opener in Australia , there was only one measuring point for both DRS zones , so that in the event of a successful overtaking maneuver in the first zone, the driver ahead could use the DRS again in the second zone.

Pastor Maldonado , Sergio Pérez (four each), Marcus Ericsson (three), Jenson Button , Romain Grosjean , Nico Hülkenberg , Roberto Merhi and Max Verstappen (two each) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Hamilton (three times), Kimi Raikkonen , Fernando Alonso , Button, Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo (once each), six former winners competed in this Grand Prix.

The race stewards were Silvia Bellot (ESP), Garry Connelly (AUS), Alan Jones (AUS) and Mike Kaerne (CAN).

training

In the first free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time in 1: 16.212 minutes ahead of Rosberg and Grosjean. In the second free practice, Hamilton set the fastest time in 1: 15.988 minutes, ahead of Vettel and Raikkonen. It started to rain towards the middle of practice, so most of the drivers stayed in the pits. Hamilton was one of the few drivers who took to the track anyway. Since only intermediates were mounted on his car despite the heavy rain, he came off the track due to aquaplaning at turn 10 and crashed into the boundary of the track, damaging the front wing and nose of his Mercedes.

In the third free practice, Rosberg set the fastest time in 1: 15.660 minutes ahead of Raikkonen and Grosjean. The training had to be interrupted twice. The first interruption was caused by an accident involving Felipe Nasr , who, while zigzagging to warm up the tires, lost control of his car with activated DRS and hit the barriers. The second interruption caused Button, who had to park his car at the edge of the track with an engine failure. After the marshals waved red flags, Vettel passed Roberto Merhi on the way back into the pits. Since he drove at more than 300 km / h, he received a starting place penalty of five places and was given three penalty points.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Grosjean set the fastest lap time. Button was unable to take part in qualifying due to an engine change and therefore did not qualify for the race. The race stewards allowed him to take part in the race and start from 20th place. The Manor pilots, Felipe Massa and Vettel were eliminated. Massa complained to the team radio about a loss of power, Vettel could not get the full power of his drive due to a defective transistor .

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Hamilton was fastest. The Sauber drivers, Alonso and the Toro Rosso drivers did not make it into the last part of the timed practice.

The final section lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were assigned. Hamilton set the fastest time ahead of Rosberg and Raikkonen. He achieved his sixth pole position this year.

Verstappen, who had already been given a starting place penalty for causing a collision at the Monaco Grand Prix, received an additional starting place penalty of ten places because his vehicle had the fifth internal combustion engine installed. Since he could not be moved back enough starting positions, he received a ten-second penalty, which he had to serve at his first pit stop in the race. Since Button used the fifth MGU-H and the fifth turbocharger in his car, but had already started from last place, the starting penalty due was converted into a drive-through penalty during the race.

run

Hamilton retains the lead over Rosberg at the start

Hamilton won the race ahead of Rosberg and Valtteri Bottas . It was Hamilton's fourth win and the fourth one-two for Mercedes in 2015. For Bottas and Williams, it was the first podium of the season, making it the first Grand Prix in which both Mercedes drivers and a Ferrari driver were not on the Podium stood. The top 10 were completed by Raikkonen, Vettel, Massa, Maldonado, Hülkenberg, Daniil Kwjat and Grosjean.

In the drivers 'and constructors' world championships, the first three positions remained unchanged.
