William "Will" Stevens (born June 28, 1991 in Rochford , Essex ) is a British racing driver . He competed in Formula Renault 3.5 from 2012 to 2014 . He also took part in a Formula 1 race in 2014 . In 2015 he competed in Formula 1 for Manor Marussia .

Career

Stevens began his motorsport career in karting , where he was active until 2008. Among other things, he was British Junior ICA Champion in 2005 and KF2-CIK-FIA European Champion and KF2 Asia-Pacific Champion in 2007 . At the end of his karting days, Stevens was supported by the Honda Formula 1 team . However, Honda withdrew from Formula 1 in the meantime in 2009, so that Stevens' promotion ended.

End of 2008 joined Stevens in Formula racing and each was eighth in the winter series of British and Portuguese Formula Renault . He then took part in the Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand in winter 2008/2009 . He competed for half a season and was on the podium five times in nine races. In 2009 Stevens switched to Fortec Motorsport and started in the British Formula Renault. While his teammates James Calado and Oliver Webb finished second and third with victories, Stevens finished the season in seventh place in the drivers' standings. Third place was his best result. He also took part in four Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup races for Fortec Motorsport . He remained without points and was 34th overall.

In 2010, Stevens moved to Manor Competition and stayed in the British Formula Renault. He won two races and finished the season in fourth place in the drivers' standings. Internally he was defeated by Lewis Williamson , who was runner-up. In addition, he took part in a Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup event as a guest starter. He finished one race in second. He also competed for MP Motorsport on a racing weekend in the northern European Formula Renault. There he won a race. In 2011 Stevens returned to Fortec Motorsport and formed the driver duo with Felix Serralles in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup. In his second race, he scored his first victory in this racing series. In total, Stevens stood on the podium four times this season and started from pole position three times . Internally he prevailed against Serralles with 116 to 41 points. Stevens also took part in four British Formula Renault races. He came second twice.

After Stevens caused a sensation at the end of 2011 in test drives of the Formula Renault 3.5 with a best time on the last day of testing, he was signed by Carlin , the 2011 championship team, for the 2012 Formula Renault 3.5 season . His teammate was Kevin Magnussen . While Magnussen finished seventh with a win, Stevens achieved twelfth place overall with a third place as the best result. In 2013 , Stevens switched to P1 Motorsport in Formula Renault 3.5 , which was taken over by Strakka Racing after the first race weekend . Stevens crossed the finish line three times in second place and was on the podium five times. In the drivers' standings, he improved to fourth place. With 148 to 9 points, he decided the team-internal duel against Matias Laine clearly for himself. In addition, Stevens completed Formula 1 test drives for Caterham .

In 2014 , Stevens stayed with Strakka Racing in Formula Renault 3.5. He scored a win at the season opener in Monza and at the season finale in Jerez and was sixth in the drivers' championship. With 122 to 39 points, he again prevailed against Laine internally. Stevens was also active in Formula 1 in 2014 . Initially, he was a test driver at Caterham and was also a member of their support team. After a change of ownership at Caterham, Stevens moved to Marussia as a replacement driver in early October . Originally, he was supposed to take part in free practice for the Japanese Grand Prix . However, the commitment failed due to a lack of papers. At this point it was planned that Stevens would participate in training at some of the remaining Grands Prix. However, Marussia filed for bankruptcy after the next race and did not take part in any more events in 2014. Instead, Stevens returned to the now insolvent Caterham F1 Team and made his Formula 1 debut at the 2014 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix . The racing team was run by its bankruptcy administrator during this race. Stevens came on because the regular driver Marcus Ericsson had terminated his contract and André Lotterer and Rubens Barrichello , whom the team had made an offer for the last race, were not interested in participating. Stevens finished in 17th place.

In 2015 he received a Formula 1 cockpit at Marussia. In the meantime, the racing team had been taken over by new investors and competed under the team name Manor Marussia F1 Team . He chose the 28 as the starting number for his further Formula 1 career. In the first race, the Australian Grand Prix , Marussia did not take part in any session due to technical problems. At the following race in Malaysia , Stevens was withdrawn from the race due to fuel pressure problems. In the third race, the Chinese Grand Prix , he started for Marussia for the first time and finished in 15th place. He finished the season in 21st place overall.
