James Calado (born June 13, 1989 in Cropthorne , Worcestershire ) is a British racing driver . He competed in the GP2 series in 2012 and 2013 . In 2014 and 2015 he competed in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).

Career

Calado began his motorsport career in karting in 1999 , in which he was active until 2007. Among other things, he won the European ICA Championship in 2005. In 2008 he switched to Formula racing at Fortec Motorsport . He started in the British Formula Renault and finished seventh overall with a win. He also took part in three races of the northern European Formula Renault. Subsequently, Calado won the winter championships of the British and Portuguese Formula Renault. 2009 Calado stayed in the British Formula Renault and Fortec Motorsport. He won most of the races with eight wins, but was only runner-up at the end of the season behind Dean Smith , who won one race less. In addition, he took part in six races of the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and finished 17th overall in this series.

In 2010 Calado moved to Carlin in the British Formula 3 championship . At the second race weekend at Silverstone , Calado won two out of three races and thus clinched his first victories in the British Formula 3 championship. With a total of five wins he was runner-up behind his teammate Jean-Éric Vergne . In 2011 , Calado started for Lotus ART in the GP3 series . He won a race and finished the season in second place behind his team-mate Valtteri Bottas . After the season, Calado took part in the 2011 GP2 Final for Lotus ART . He decided the sprint race for himself and was fifth in the classification.

In 2012 Calado started for ART in the GP2 series . The team competed as the Lotus GP that season . He won his first race in the GP2 series at the sprint race at the season opener in Sepang . With Calado's failure at the sprint race in Monte Carlo , his series ended with 57 cross-series finishings in a row. He scored his second win of the season in the sprint race in Hockenheim . With 160 to 176 points, Calado lost to Esteban Gutiérrez within the team . As the best newcomer, Calado was fifth in the drivers' championship. In 2013 , Calado stayed with ART, which will use the name ART Grand Prix again this year . After finishing second in the main race at the season opener, he caused a collision in the sprint race. Due to the collision, the race stewards imposed a starting place penalty of ten places for the next race. At the eighth event in Spa-Francorchamps , Calado scored his first win of the season in the sprint race. Before that, three second places were his best results. He repeated a victory at the season finale in the sprint race on the Yas Marina Circuit . Calado finished the season with 159 points in third place and thus clearly prevailed within the team against Daniel Abt , who had scored 11 points. He also completed Formula 1 test drives for Force India for the first time . At the beginning of September he was also named test and replacement driver for this racing team. In this capacity, he first took part in a Formula 1 weekend at the Italian Grand Prix when he was used in the first free practice session.

In 2014 Calado left formula racing and switched to the GT car. He was given a cockpit at AF Corse in a Ferrari 458 Italia in the FIA World Endurance Championship . He formed a driver duo with Davide Rigon . At the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2014 , Calado was injured after a training accident. Calado and Rigon finished second in the GT class once and third four times. At the end of the season they were seventh in the GT World Cup. In 2015 , Calado and Rigon stayed with AF Corse in the FIA ​​World Endurance Championship. A second place in the GT classification was her best result. They finished the season in fourth place in the GT World Cup.
