Alexander Sims (born March 15, 1988 in London ) is a British automobile racing driver . He won the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award in 2008 . He has been competing in the FIA Formula E Championship since 2018 .

Career

After Sims 2000-2006 in karting was active, he made in 2006 in the winter series of the British Formula Renault his first experience in Formula racing . In 2007 Sims was active in the British Formula Renault and finished eighth in the championship with one victory. He also took part in some races of the French and Northern European Formula Renault and started in the winter series of the British Formula Renault. 2008 Sims stayed another season in the British Formula Renault and was runner-up behind Adam Christodoulou . In addition, he took part in two races of the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup and always reached the top 10. He also made guest starts in the Western European Formula Renault and the Pacific Formula BMW .

In 2009 Sims switched to Mücke Motorsport in the Formula 3 Euro Series , in which he celebrated his first victory in the Sunday race at the Nürburgring . At the end of the season he finished fourth in the overall standings. Sims also took part in two race weekends of the international Formula Masters as a guest starter. In 2010 Sims switched to ART Grand Prix , the championship team of the previous year, for which he contested his second season in the Formula 3 Euro Series. With a win on the first race weekend in Le Castellet , he finished fourth overall at the end of the season. He also made guest starts for ART in the British Formula 3 championship , in which he crossed the finish line first in one race, and took part in two Auto GP race weekends . At the 2010 Formula 3 Masters , he also finished second behind his team-mate Valtteri Bottas .

In 2011 Sims moved to Status Grand Prix in the GP3 series . With one win and a total of five podium finishes, he finished the season as the best driver of his team in fifth place in the drivers' standings. He also took part in the season finale of the British Formula 3 Championship for Motopark Academy . He decided a race for himself. He also competed for TOM’S at the Macau Grand Prix .

In 2012 Sims stayed at Status GP, but no longer started in formula racing for the racing team, but in long-distance races in an LMP2 racing car. In the European Le Mans Series he finished third in his debut race in Le Castellet and was tenth in the LMP2 drivers' championship. For Status he also competed for the first time in 2012 in the 24-hour race of Le Mans . He also returned as a guest starter for T-Sport to an event at the Nürburgring in the Formula 3 Euro Series . He finished in first place in one run. He needed participation to start again at the Macau Grand Prix. In 2013 Sims started for Hexis Racing in a McLaren MP4-12C GT3 in the Blancpain Endurance Series and finished 15th in the GT3 Pro Cup with his teammates Álvaro Parente and Stef Dusseldorp . He also completed two races in the FIA GT Series in a McLaren GT car . He also took part in several formula races. In the 2013 GP3 series , he took part in one race weekend for Status Grand Prix and three race weekends for Carlin . With Status he reached a second place, with Carlin he won the sprint race in Spa-Francorchamps and achieved another second place. He finished eighth in the drivers' championship. In the European Formula 3 championship in 2013 , he contested four race weekends for T-Sport and was on the podium in five out of twelve races. In the championship he was in tenth place at the end of the season.

In 2014 Sims switched to the British GT Championship for Ecurie Ecosse . He won two races and was third in the GT3 classification. In addition, Sims took part in the Blancpain Endurance Series for various teams. In 2015 Sims stayed with Ecurie Ecosse in the British GT Championship. He won two more races and improved to second place overall. He also took part in a race in the Blancpain Endurance Series and he returned with HitechGP for two events as a guest starter in the European Formula 3 championship.

In 2016, Sim's main focus was on the Blancpain GT Series Sprint Cup . He started for Rowe Racing . A second place was the best result for him and his team-mate Philipp Eng , who finished the season in eleventh place. He also started for Rowe Racing in the Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup. Here he won together with Eng and Maxime Martin the Spa 24 Hours . In the overall standings, he and Eng reached fourth place. He also started some races in the British GT Championship and again made guest starts in the European Formula 3 Championship.

In 2017, Sims competed for BMW RLL in the WeatherTech Sports Car Championship , where he won three races alongside Bill Auberlen and took second place in the GT Le Mans class. He also started again in the Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup, but this time without much success: in the overall standings he was only 27th.

In 2018 Sims continued in the WeatherTech Sports Car Championship, where he won the GT Le Mans classification alongside Connor De Philippi in Virginia and Laguna Seca . In the Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup, he continues to compete for Rowe Racing; In July 2018 he achieved great success there when he and Nick Catsburg and Jens Klingmann took second place in the prestigious 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps . He also started at Le Mans for the second time , but did not reach the finish line.

Sims made his debut in the FIA Formula E Championship in the 2018/19 season , where he competed for BMW i Andretti Motorsport . With a second place as the best result, he finished 13th in the drivers' championship with 57 points.
