The Blancpain Sprint Series (held in 2013 as the FIA GT Series) is a motorsport racing series for Gran Turismo vehicles in the GT3 class . It was launched in 2013 by the SRO Motorsports Group and is the successor to the FIA GT1 World Championship , which was held from 2010 to 2012. Before that, the SRO Motorsports Group also organized a GT series under the name FIA GT . The Swiss company Blancpain has been the title sponsor since 2014 .

Sporting regulations

Categories

The starting field is divided into three categories, all of which compete with vehicles according to the technical regulations of the GT3 group . The classes differ in terms of driver strength. The strength of a driver is determined by the SRO's driver categorization, which is already used in other SRO series. The drivers are classified according to their previous sporting performance and their current age in platinum, gold, silver or bronze. There are the following categories:

GT3 Pro Cup GT3 Pro-Am Cup GT3 Silver Cup (since 2014)
Driver categories open at least one bronze driver or
two silver drivers over 30 years of age
two silver drivers under 25 years of age

There was also a gentleman trophy in the 2013 season.

Bronze drivers or drivers with physical disabilities are also allowed to contest the race alone, but must then also complete a pit stop.

All categories will always be on the track at the same time on the weekend. There is also another training session for bronze drivers.

format

The racing format was adopted from the FIA GT1 World Championship . After the free practice sessions, there is time practice that determines the starting order for the first race, the so-called qualifying race. The qualifying race lasts 60 minutes and requires a driver change in a small time window towards the middle of the race. Points are awarded for the overall standings for the first positions in the race, and the result also corresponds to the starting order of the second race, the main race. This main race also lasts 60 minutes and has the same pit stop rules. In the end, however, more points are given.

Current scoring

Points are awarded according to the following scheme:

Qualifying race
placement 1 2 3 4th 5 6th
Points 8th 6th 4th 3 2 1
Main Race
placement 1 2 3 4th 5 6th 7th 8th 9 10
Points 25th 18th 15th 12 10 8th 6th 4th 2 1

Only the best-placed vehicle will count in the team classification, so teams with different numbers of vehicles (one to three) have the same chances.

Technical regulations

The technical rules correspond to those of the FIA category GT3.
