FIA GT1 World Championship 2010

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 2010 FIA GT1 World Championship was the debut season of the FIA GT1 World Championship , which succeeded the FIA GT Championship . It was the first sports car racing series to be advertised as a world championship again by the FIA since the sports car world championship was discontinued in 1992 .

The season started on April 17th, 2010 at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi and the season finale on December 5th in San Luis .

A total of 20 races were driven on ten race weekends in the United Arab Emirates , Great Britain , the Czech Republic , France , Belgium , Germany, Portugal , Spain , Brazil and Argentina .

Six vehicle manufacturers competed in the season with Aston Martin , Chevrolet , Ford , Lamborghini , Maserati and Nissan .

Overall winners were Michael Bartels and Andrea Bertolini in the Maserati MC12 GT1 with 138 points.

history

Venues

The official racing calendar was announced on December 11, 2009. The eighth round of the GT1 World Championship, originally planned in Durban, South Africa , was canceled during the current season due to modifications for the 2010 World Cup and was instead relocated to the Circuito de Navarra in Spain. The Spa-Francorchamps 24-hour race , which was previously held as part of the FIA GT Championship, was no longer part of the FIA GT1 World Championship. Instead, the championship race was held separately from the 24-hour race on the same weekend.

Two runs were held per race weekend, with the first race serving as the qualification run for the championship classification run, which was the second race. All races stretched over a duration of one hour.

Manufacturer

The SRO Motorsports Group originally expected at least five vehicle manufacturers to take part in the 2010 opening season. A maximum of six manufacturers were allowed, although they were not allowed to use the racing vehicles themselves, but only to provide factory support for customer teams. Each manufacturer supported two teams with two racing vehicles each, so that a total of four vehicles from each manufacturer participated. To ensure a balanced competition, each vehicle was tested by the FIA and its performance was adapted to the others.

In June 2009, the first three manufacturers announced their participation in the 2010 season. Nismo , the motorsport division of Nissan, developed a racing version of the Nissan GT-R . This has already been used by Gigawave Motorsport in a number of races in the 2009 FIA GT Championship. In the same year, Ford had Matech Concepts develop a racing version of the Ford GT . For Lamborghini as the third manufacturer, Reiter Engineering developed a racing car based on the Lamborghini Murciélago LP670-4 SV .

After the first three manufacturers were announced, Aston Martin Racing and Prodrive submitted an application to the FIA to allow customer teams to participate with the Aston Martin DBR9, which has been adapted to the new regulations . The FIA approved this application so that the vehicle was eligible to participate. Chevrolet then asked also for a special permit for the Corvette C6.R on. Most recently, Maserati and Saleen applied for a permit. Their vehicles, the Maserati MC12 GT1 and the Saleen S7R , however, required an additional exemption from the requirements, as they did not produce the required 300 vehicles. In November, the SRO finally confirmed the six eligible manufacturers for the 2010 season, including Nissan, Ford and Lamborghini, as well as Chevrolet, Aston Martin and Maserati through technical adjustments to the regulations. The manufacturer Saleen, who last applied for the remaining starting places, could no longer be admitted as the seventh manufacturer.

Teams

Each manufacturer was represented by two private teams, who competed with their vehicles in the FIA GT1 World Championship.

Matech Concepts and the Marc VDS Racing Team field the Ford GT1. Hexis AMR competed with the Aston Martin DBR9. Fischer Racing was the second Aston Martin team to join under the name Young Driver AMR . The Swiss Racing Team and Sumo Power GT started with the Nissan GT-R . The five-time FIA GT champion Vitaphone Racing Team competed for Maserati . The second team was Triple H Team Hegersport .

DKR Engineering and the Selleslagh Racing Team have merged to form Mad-Croc Racing , which fielded the first two Corvette C6.R. The remaining two Corvette racing cars went to Phoenix Racing / Carsport , which arose from the merger between Phoenix Racing and Carsport Holland . Lamborghini was represented by Reiter Engineering , which was also responsible for the development of its racing car. Münnich Motorsport also fielded two Lamborghinis.

On January 17, 2010, the SRO confirmed the participation of the twelve teams in the GT1 World Championship.

driver

Up to 48 drivers took part in each race, a large number of them over the entire season. These included both experienced sports car racing drivers and young drivers.

Seven former FIA GT champions were registered in the series, including three-time champions Michael Bartels and Andrea Bertolini , who continued to share a Vitaphone Maserati. The three-time champion Christophe Bouchut drove a Münnich Lamborghini, while Ricardo Zonta , the 1998 champion , drove a Reiter Lamborghini. Karl Wendlinger , the 1999 champion and record holder of FIA GT victories, took part in a Nissan from the Swiss Racing Team, while Jamie Campbell-Walter , the 2000 champion, drove a Nissan from Sumo Power. Matteo Bobbi , the 2003 champion, drove a Hegersport Maserati.

Some other successful sports car drivers were the Swiss Racing driver Seiji Ara , winner of the Le Mans 24-hour race in 2004, the Hexis driver Henri Moser , FIA GT3 champion from 2007, the Young Driver drivers Tomáš Enge and Stefan Mücke , who won the Le Mans Series in 2008, the Mad Croc drivers Mika Salo and Oliver Gavin , former champions of the American Le Mans Series and the two-time Super GT champion Michael Krumm in a sumo power Nissan.

Some drivers already had world championship experience from other motorsport disciplines, such as Formula 1 or the World Touring Car Championship . Romain Grosjean moved from Formula 1 to Matech Competition in the FIA GT1 World Championship after the 2009 season. Former Formula 1 driver Enrique Bernoldi won a race in his debut season in the FIA GT Championship in 2009 and switched to the Vitaphone Racing Team for the 2010 season. Even Jean-Denis Delétraz , Karl Wendlinger and Mika Salo already attended some Formula 1 race. Came from the touring car racing Altfrid Heger and Marc Hennerici , the privateer champion of the World Touring Car Championship in 2005.

With the Swiss Cyndie Allemann , Rahel Frey and Natacha Gachnang , three racing drivers who were previously active in formula racing took part in the FIA GT1 World Championship.
