The Circuito de Potrero de los Funes is a race track in the Argentine province of San Luis around the reservoir Embalse Potrero de los Funes . The semi-permanent course was set up for the first time in 1987 and rebuilt in 2008.

layout

The 6.270 km long course runs on public roads around the lake, which are, however, built similar to a race track. The very fluid and fast racetrack was only slightly changed compared to the layout of the 1980s. Two chicanes (curves 5 & 6 and 11-13) were installed and the pit lane and the start / finish systems were relocated. These were formerly on the opposite side of the lake between today's curves 8 and 9.

The course, popular with drivers, is characterized by two completely different parts. In addition to the fluid, fast and demanding curves on the edge of the lake, the last part of the route has a winding section. Here the vehicles have to complete some serpentine-like curves before heading back towards the home straight.

Racing history

When the course first came up in 1987, several races were held. Two spectators died in an accident in the Turismo Carretera race , and another accident happened in a frame race. These events resulted in the course not being used again.

The SRO Motorsports Group , which was looking for events outside of Europe, ensured the resurrection of the course . The course was set up within 10 months and the cost was around 56 million pesos (approx. 9 million euros ).

The FIA GT Championship staged the circuit for the first time in 2008, and the frame series included the TC2000 . After this became the main event in 2009, the FIA GT1 World Championship returned to the course for the 2010 racing season .
