The 2011 FIA GT1 World Championship was the second season of the FIA GT1 World Championship . The season started on March 26, 2011 at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi and the season finale on November 6 in San Luis .

A total of 20 races were driven on ten race weekends in the United Arab Emirates , Belgium , Portugal , Germany, Great Britain , Spain , France , the People's Republic of China and Argentina .

With Aston Martin , Chevrolet , Ford , Lamborghini and Nissan , five vehicle manufacturers competed this season.

Overall winners were Michael Krumm and Lucas Luhr in the Nissan GT-R GT1 with 137 points.

history

Regulations

In the 2011 season, the regulations changed on some points. The scoring of the qualification run was adjusted so that instead of the first three drivers, the first six drivers received points according to the 8-6-4-3-2-1 scheme. The distribution of points in the championship run, however, remained unchanged.

Because of the team criticism from the previous season, the SRO allowed six sets of tires per vehicle in the new season instead of the previous four sets of tires. This change made it possible for the teams to do more training runs.

Venues

In the first version of the official racing calendar on December 10, 2010, nine events were planned. Of the racetracks from the first GT1 World Championship , Abu Dhabi , Silverstone , Le Castellet , Portimão , Los Arcos and San Luis remained on the racing calendar. Instead of Spa-Francorchamps , Brno and São Paulo , the routes Zolder , Ordos and Beijing were added. Shortly before the start of the season, the Sachsenring was added to the racing calendar as the tenth venue instead of the Nürburgring .

Two runs were held per race weekend, with the first race serving as the qualification run for the championship classification run, which was the second race. All races stretched over a duration of one hour.

Manufacturer

Because of the four vehicles and two teams per manufacturer prescribed in the regulations, only five manufacturers competed in the world championship instead of the original six brands from the previous season.

Both Nissan and Ford could only be kept in the series because one team agreed to use four vehicles under two different team names. Likewise, Chevrolet was only able to continue participating in the racing series shortly before the entry deadline with two teams that only fielded one vehicle at the season opener.

Maserati , whose racing car won the GT1 World Championship in 2010, was no longer represented because the Triple H Team Hegersport withdrew from the racing series and no other team joined the Vitaphone Racing team. Ultimately, Vitaphone Racing waived the entry for the 2011 season.

Teams

After the 2010 season, the teams Phoenix Racing , Triple H Team Hegersport, Matech Competition and Reiter Engineering withdrew from the GT1 World Championship.

The resulting from the cooperation between last year Selleslagh Racing Team and DKR Engineering is incurred Team Mad-Croc Racing was dissolved and the two teams were separated in 2011 with the Chevrolet Corvette C6.R on. The French team Selleslagh Racing had taken the name of a Chinese bank and started as Exim Bank Team China .

The two teams Hexis AMR and Young Driver AMR started unchanged for Aston Martin. All-Inkl.com Münnich Motorsport started the season again with the Lamborghini Murciélago LP670 R-SV while the Swiss Racing Team switched from Nissan to Lamborghini.

For Nissan, the Sumo Power GT team started again and in order to meet the regulations, it entered the championship with a second team under the name JR Motorsports .

At Ford, too, both teams came from the same company. The Marc VDS Racing Team had Belgian Racing set to get back in the 2011 season with the Ford GT1 participate.

driver

Only one of the driver duos from last season stayed together. Dominik Schwager and Nicky Pastorelli continued to compete for the All-Inkl.com Münnich Motorsport team.

The other teams were reassembled. Within the Young Driver AMR team, Tomáš Enge and Darren Turner were separated after their successful 2010 season. Turner was now in a car with Stefan Mücke . Enge drove together with Alex Müller , who last worked for Triple H Team Hegersport the previous season.

In team Sumo Power got Michael Krumm with Lucas Luhr a new partner. His driver colleague from last year, Peter Dumbreck , now formed a British duo with Richard Westbrook , who was still racing for Matech Competition in 2010.

Peter Kox went from Reiter Engineering to the Swiss Racing Team and Mike Hezemans switched from Phoenix Racing to Exim Bank Team China with his Corvette.

Ricardo Zonta and Enrique Bernoldi , who started for the Reiter Engineering team and the Vitaphone Racing Team last year, formed a new driver pair at Sumo Power GT in 2011. Marc Hennerici left Phoenix Racing and Frédéric Makowiecki moved from Hexis AMR to the Marc VDS Racing Team.

Many new pilots entered the championship. Stef Dusseldorp and Christian Hohenadel , among others, joined the Hexis AMR team. The Belgian Racing team recruited Vanina Ickx and Antoine Leclerc as new drivers. Markus Winkelhock joined Münnich Motorsport and drove together with Marc Basseng . David Brabham came to Sumo Power GT and started with his team colleague Jamie Campbell-Walter .
