Reports
background
For the 2010 Formula 3 Masters, 24 drivers from the British Formula 3 Championship , the German Formula 3 Cup , the Formula 3 Euro Series and the GP3 Series competed . Last year's winner Valtteri Bottas as well as Jean-Éric Vergne , the championship leader of the British Formula 3 championship, and Edoardo Mortara , the championship leader of the Formula 3 Euro Series, started this race.
12 pilots started with Volkswagen and 12 pilots with Mercedes-Benz engines.
training
In the first free practice, drivers from the Formula 3 Euro Series set the scene. Alexander Sims set the fastest lap time ahead of four other drivers from the Formula 3 Euro Series. In the second free practice session there was again a dominance of the Formula 3 Euro Series drivers, who took the first seven places. The fastest driver was Mortara.
Qualifying
In both qualifying sections Sims was the fastest driver in the field. He secured pole position in front of his team-mate Bottas. Marco Wittmann came third . The first five starting positions were drivers from the Formula 3 Euro Series. The best driver from the British Formula 3 Championship was Vergne, who started the race from eighth position.
run
Shortly before the start it started to rain slightly and the start was carried out behind the safety car. From the leading group, only Roberto Merhi initially bet on rain tires and he was able to break away from the rest of the field. The rain didn't last long and while the drivers with rain tires had an advantage at first, the tide turned as the track dried out and the pilots who had stayed on dry tires from the start had done everything right.
After Merhi had lost the top position to Sims, Bottas was able to overtake his team-mate, who had started from pole position, and take the lead. The Finn kept the lead until the end of the race, defending his victory from last year. Bottas is the first driver to win the Formula 3 Masters twice. Wittmann came third and thus ensured that only drivers from the Formula 3 Euro Series were on the podium. The best driver who did not drive in the Formula 3 Euro Series was Vergne, who finished fourth with the fastest lap.
