Andraž Kirm (born September 6, 1984 in Ljubljana ) is a Slovenian football player . The midfielder has been under contract with Omonia Nicosia since the 2014/15 season .

Club career

Kirm began his career in the youth of the small NK Šmartno in his hometown Ljubljana. At the age of 18 he signed his first contract with the then Slovenian third division club NK Slovan Ljubljana. After two seasons with sporadic playing times, the next career jump followed to the second division club NK Svoboda Ljubljana.

At Svoboda he had a difficult time in his debut season. The team was in a relegation battle for the entire season, which meant little use was made of the then strong full-back. At the end of the season, the club managed to stay eighth in the table, while Kirm had only played eight league games. His breakthrough followed in the 2004/05 season. Kirm was pulled forward by the full defense to the right midfield, where he literally blossomed. As a thinker and leader in Svoboda's game, he led the team from relegation candidate to promotion aspirant who was only just missed with third place in the table. Kirm was the discovery of the season and was able to choose from several offers from various Slovenian first division clubs.

He decided on an offer from the newly crowned runner-up NK Domžale , which was the first time he was under contract with a club outside Ljubljana. In Domžale he again needed almost an entire season until he was able to establish himself as a regular player. Although he was used in 29 games this season, he completed most of them as a substitute. The club had to be content with the runner-up title, two points behind ND Gorica .

In the 2006/07 season he made his breakthrough in the Slovenska Nogometna League . With six goals and nine assists, he made his mark on Domžale's game, as he did in his last season at Slovan. In the club's offensive system with three storms, he was convincing as a source of ideas from the right side, which harmonized particularly well with the strong players Sebastjan Cimirotic and Zlatan Ljubijankič . Together with Ljubijankič and Branko Ilič he formed a strong right axis over which most of the attacking game ran. At the end of the season he celebrated the first championship title in the club's history with the club. Despite his strong performances, he was initially ignored by national team coach Branko Oblak .

In the following season he lost his direct back man after the departure of Ilič to Betis Sevilla , which was compensated internally by the significantly more defensive Luka Elsner . This gave Kirm more freedom, which was reflected in his offensive performance. With nine goals and eleven assists, he set a new career record, Domžale defended the title in the SN league and Kirm celebrated his debut for Slovenia under the newly appointed national team coach Matjaž Kek .

For the season 2008/09 left with Ljubijankič and Dario Zahora two top performers the club, which could not be replaced. The consistently inexperienced team often presented itself overwhelmed, which even Kirm could not compensate despite convincing performance. At the end of the season they finished in the disappointing fifth place in the table, after which he announced his departure from the club. For a long time there was a sign of a move to Italy to Chievo Verona , which ultimately did not materialize.

In early July 2009, the then reigning Polish champions Wisła Krakow announced the player's commitment. At Wisła he was given a central role in the midfield diamond of the team, in which he could fit seamlessly. In his debut season in Poland, he was used in all 30 games of the season, but could not play his offensive strength. With three goals and four assists it fell short of expectations. The team missed defending their title three points behind Lech Posen . In the 2010/11 season , however, he found his way back to his old strength and with nine goals and seven assists made a significant contribution to the championship.

At the end of August 2012, Kirm moved to the Dutch first division club FC Groningen for 300,000 euros . He signed a two-year contract until the end of June 2014 with an option for another year.

National team

Kirm debuted on August 22, 2007 in a 1-1 draw in a friendly against Montenegro for the Slovenian national football team .

As a result, he was a regular in the team under coach Matjaž Kek in the remaining qualifying games for the 2008 European Football Championship in Austria and Switzerland . Slovenia, being sixth in the table in Group G, clearly failed to reach the final round.

In qualifying for the 2010 World Cup , he was a cornerstone of Kek's midfield system. He was used in all qualifying games and scored a goal in the 5-0 home win against San Marino to make it 3-0.

On June 1, 2010 he was nominated by Kek in the final squad of Slovenia for the finals in South Africa. Failure to consider the player would have been a big surprise, as Kek had already identified him as one of his key players before the squad was announced.
