training
In the first free practice, Lucas di Grassi drove the fastest lap in 1: 08.630 minutes ahead of Pascal Wehrlein and Sam Bird . Training was interrupted by Sébastien Buemi after an accident . Since the recovery of the vehicle was very time-consuming, the training was extended by ten minutes.
In the second free practice session, José María López was fastest with a lap time of 1: 08.194 minutes ahead of Robin Frijns and di Grassi.
Qualifying
Qualifying started at 12:00 p.m. and took place in four groups of five or six drivers each, each group had six minutes in which the drivers had a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 200 kW and then a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 250 kW were allowed to drive. Wehrlein was fastest with a lap time of 1: 08.463 minutes.
The six fastest drivers then drove in the first six positions in the individual time trial called Superpole . Di Grassi secured pole position with a lap time of 1: 08.290 minutes and thus three points. The other positions were occupied by Buemi, Wehrlein, Abt, Vandoorne and Bird.
Di Grassi was subsequently disqualified. In qualifying he had used the brakes more for no reason during his lap when he drove back into the pit lane than he had on his flying lap. This rule was introduced after Tom Dillmann's vehicle in Marrakech had a brake failure and a rear-end collision in the entrance to the pit lane. The points for pole position went to Buemi. Vandoorne's lap time was canceled because he had left the pit lane shortly after the pit lights turned red in Superpole .
