The Santiago E-Prix 2018 (officially: 2018 Antofagasta Minerals Santiago E-Prix ) took place on February 3rd at the Formula E race track Santiago (Parque Forestal) in Santiago de Chile and was the fourth race of the FIA Formula E Championship 2017/18 . It was the first Santiago E-Prix and the first race of the FIA Formula E Championship in Chile .

report

background

After the Marrakech E-Prix , Felix Rosenqvist led the drivers' standings with four points ahead of Sam Bird and eleven points ahead of Jean-Éric Vergne . In the team standings, Mahindra Racing was 17 points ahead of DS Virgin and 32 points ahead of Techeetah .

As early as the race in Marrakech, the FIA planned that the minimum time that had been set before each race since the series began should be dropped. After the teams there expressed safety concerns in a letter to the race stewards about the planned abolition of the minimum time when changing vehicles, this was postponed to the race in Santiago. In the run-up to the race, the vehicles were equipped with seat belts from endurance racing , with which the drivers can fasten themselves quickly after changing vehicles and without the help of a mechanic. It was therefore the first E-Prix in which there was no minimum time to change vehicles.

Sébastien Buemi , Lucas di Grassi and José María López received a so-called FANBOOST , they were allowed to increase the output of their second vehicle up to 200 kW and thus use up to 100 kilojoules of additional energy. For Buemi and di Grassi it was the third FANBOOST this season. For López it was the second FANBOOST of his career. He received the first at the start of the preseason .

training

In the first free practice, Bird was fastest with a lap time of 1: 19.439 minutes ahead of Rosenqvist and Vergne. The training was canceled about three minutes before the end after an accident by Maro Engel .

In the second free practice, Vergne set the fastest time in 1: 18.662 minutes ahead of Alex Lynn and Mitch Evans . This training session was also canceled shortly before the end after an accident by Nicolas Prost .

Qualifying

Qualifying started at 12:00 p.m. and took place in four groups of five drivers each, each group had six minutes in which the drivers had a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 170 kW and then a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 200 kW were allowed to drive. Luca Filippi and Evans did not qualify for the race after driving errors. André Lotterer was fastest with a lap time of 1: 18.796 minutes.

The five fastest drivers then drove in the first five positions in the individual time trial called Superpole . Vergne secured pole position with a lap time of 1: 19.161 minutes and thus three points. The other positions were occupied by Buemi, di Grassi, Lotterer and Bird. Lotterer hit the barrier at the beginning of the lap and completed the lap at slow speed, Bird turned on his lap, also hit the barrier and could not finish the lap.

Di Grassi was relocated ten starting positions due to a change in the inverter , so he will start the race from 13th position on the grid. Prost was moved two grid positions back because he drove one lap too much in qualifying. Evans was also relegated by ten starting places because of a change of the Intervers. However, since he was already in last place, the penalty was converted into a ten-second time penalty, which he has to serve when changing vehicles.

run

The race lasted 37 laps. Filippi started from the pit lane for tactical reasons.

Lotterer and Nelson Piquet Jr. started better than Vergne and Buemi, both overtaking Buemi before the first corner. Here Piquet attacked Vergne on the outside, but he was able to defend himself. López, who had also started very well, also attacked Bird on the outside in the second corner. The vehicles touched, López crashed into the track barrier and retired with a broken wheel suspension. In the back of the field there was another collision, Heidfeld hit Daniel Abt . Heidfeld also damaged his suspension, he pitted and switched to his second vehicle. In the further course of the first lap, Rosenqvist overtook Engel, the vehicles touched and Engel hit the lane. He also dropped out. The race management decided to send the safety car out onto the track so that Engel and López's vehicles could be recovered. Vergne led before Piquet, Lotterer, Buemi, Bird, Lynn, Prost, Oliver Turvey , di Grassi and Abt.

At the end of the fourth lap, the race was released again. Piquet attacked Vergne immediately afterwards, but couldn't get past him. On the seventh lap, Abt's wheel suspension broke, which was damaged in the accident with Heidfeld on the first lap. Abt drove to the pits and switched to his second vehicle.

In the 12th lap, di Grassi first overtook Turvey, three laps later then Prost as well. Lotterer overtook Piquet on the 19th lap and was now second. Di Grassi also overtook Lynn, who pitted to change vehicles at the end of the lap. Besides him, Prost, Turvey, Tom Blomqvist and Filippi also switched to their second car this lap. Turvey stopped at the edge of the track after changing vehicles. However, he managed to restart the vehicle.

One lap later, Vergne, Lotterer, Piquet, Buemi, di Grassi, Evans, Rosenqvist, Jérôme D'Ambrosio and Edoardo Mortara changed cars. However, after a few meters, Di Grassi had to park his car with a defective inverter. On the 21st lap, Bird and António Félix da Costa, the last two drivers, switched to the second car.

After the vehicle changes, Vergne led Lotterer, Piquet, Buemi, Rosenqvist, Lynn, Bird, Heidfeld, D'Ambrosio and Prost. In the case of Heidfeld, whose battery only had around 20 percent remaining energy at that time, it was foreseeable that he would not be able to finish the race.

Lynn let his teammate Bird pass without a fight in the 23rd lap. Four laps later, Lynn retired with a gearbox defect. Shortly afterwards Buemi overtook Piquet and was now third.

Vergne wrongly assumed that he would have to make do with the remaining energy of his vehicle for an additional lap. Due to technical problems in the team's box, the radio connection to the drivers also failed, so Vergne could not be informed of his mistake. For this reason, Vergne saved more energy than necessary, so that Lotterer, Buemi, Piquet, Rosenqvist and Bird could catch up in the following rounds. Lotterer attacked Vergne several times, but he defended himself with all available means. The cars of the two teammates touched each other several times.

On lap 31 Piquet Buemi attacked, braked himself and had to drive into the run-off zone . It fell back to sixth place. Lotterer attacked Vergne several times, but couldn't get past. The same applied to Rosenqvist, who stayed behind Buemi despite various attacks.

Vergne won the race ahead of Lotterer and Buemi. Vergne and Techeetah both scored their second win after the 2017 Montreal ePrix . It was the first double victory for a team in the history of the FIA Formula E Championship. Lotterer achieved his first podium finish in the FIA Formula E Championship. The remaining points were placed by Rosenqvist, Bird, Piquet, Evans, D'Ambrosio, Félix da Costa and Prost. The point for the fastest race lap went to Bird.

After the race, during the technical inspection it was found that the vehicles of D'Ambrosio, Lotterer and Vergne had been made unauthorized modifications to the new seat belts. Since these changes were not communicated to the technical delegate of the FIA before the race as prescribed, the respective team was sentenced to a fine of 15,000 euros each in all three cases. This decision caused a lot of criticism from drivers, team leaders and fans, as Abt had been disqualified at the race in Hong Kong because of a supposedly minor rule violation.

In the overall standings, Vergne took the lead from Rosenqvist and Bird. The lead also changed in the team classification, Techeetah was now ahead of Mahindra Racing and DS Virgin.
