The 2017 Hong Kong E-Prix (officially: 2017 FIA Formula E HKT Hong Kong E-Prix ) took place on December 2nd and 3rd at the Hong Kong Central Harbourfront Circuit in Hong Kong and was the first and second races of the FIA Formula -E championship 2017/18 . It was the second Hong Kong E-Prix, but it was the first time that two races were held as part of the event.
report
background
Compared to the previous year, the route was slightly modified, the chicane consisting of turn three and turn four was made narrower, so the vehicles had to drive more slowly at this point.
Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler started this race for the first time as an Audi works team. After a season with a technical cooperation with Faraday Future, Dragon Racing now competed again as a purely private team.
Luca Filippi ( NIO Formula E Team ), Neel Jani (Dragon Racing), Kamui Kobayashi ( Andretti Autosport ), André Lotterer ( Techeetah ) and Edoardo Mortara ( Venturi ) made their debut in the FIA Formula E Championship at this E-Prix.
Nelson Piquet Jr. ( Jaguar ) contested a race for his new team for the first time; Alex Lynn ( DS Virgin Racing ) made his debut as a regular driver.
With Sébastien Buemi , a former winner entered this race.
Daniel Abt , Filippi and Kobayashi received a so-called FANBOOST for the first race , they were allowed to increase the output of their second vehicle to up to 200 kW and thus use up to 100 kilojoules of additional energy. For Abt it was the tenth FANBOOST in his career. Buemi and di Grassi thus remained without FANBOOST after having received it 14 times in a row.
For the second race, Abt, Filippi and Kobayashi received the FANBOOST again .
Race day one
training
In the first free practice, Buemi set the fastest lap time in 1: 03.310 minutes ahead of Mitch Evans and Abt.
In the second free practice session, Evans was fastest in 1: 02.875 minutes ahead of Abt and di Grassi.
Qualifying
Qualifying started at 12:00 p.m. and took place in four groups of five drivers each, each group had six minutes in which the drivers had a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 170 kW and then a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 200 kW were allowed to drive. Sam Bird was fastest with a lap time of 1: 03.276 minutes. Qualifying was interrupted after an accident by Prost, who hit the track barrier after a driving error. An advertising banner got caught on his front wing, which he then pulled behind him. The banner then got caught on the front wing of Jérôme D'Ambrosio, who was driving behind Prost . Mortara also hit the barriers and was unable to finish his fast lap.
The five fastest drivers then drove in the first five positions in the individual time trial called Superpole . Jean-Éric Vergne secured pole position with a lap time of 1: 03.568 minutes and thus three points, despite a spinning as a result of contact with the track barrier on the last meters of his lap. It was Vergne's fifth pole position in the FIA Formula E Championship. The other positions were occupied by Bird, Heidfeld, Abt and Felix Rosenqvist .
Jani was moved ten positions back because the battery had to be changed after an accident in the first free practice session.
run
The race lasted 43 laps, the minimum time for changing vehicles was 37 seconds.
After the start, Heidfeld overtook Bird on the outside and tried to pass Vergne as well. At the end of the first corner he drove onto the dirty part of the track and subsequently lost two positions to Bird and Oliver Turvey , who had started very well from seventh on the grid. In the chicane from turn three and turn four , there were several contacts in the middle part of the field. Among other things, Piquet, who was driving inside corner four and touching the boundary there, hit the front of Lotterer's vehicle with his left rear wheel. As a result, he was unable to turn in in time, so that he hit the TecPro barrier on the outside of the curve and stopped. Since Evans, Nicolas Prost , Mortara and Jani were immediately behind him, and they could not drive back or forth afterwards, the race management decided to abandon the race with the red flag . It was the first race termination in the history of the FIA Formula E Championship.
At this point, Vergne was leading before Bird, Turvey, Heidfeld, Abt, di Grassi, Buemi, António Félix da Costa , Jérôme D'Ambrosio and Maro Engel .
The restart took place around 30 minutes behind the safety car , and there were no shifts in position. Lotterer was given a five-second time penalty because the mechanics only removed a cooling unit from his vehicle after the three-minute signal .
Di Grassi attacked Abbot who defended himself. The vehicles touched. Buemi used this to catch up and in turn launch an attack on di Grassi. Di Grassi also managed to repel the attack. There was also contact between the vehicles. A few meters behind the position battle, there was contact between Filippi and Rosenqvist. Rosenqvist spun and fell back to 15th place, Filippi was given a drive-through penalty for causing the collision. D'Ambrosio stayed on the track with technical problems. He lost more than one lap, but was able to continue after restarting his car.
At the front, Bird and Vergne pulled away, while Turvey, on the other hand, could not follow the pace of the two drivers and stopped the drivers behind him. Heidfeld attacked Turvey in the ninth round, but he defended himself. Heidfeld lost so much momentum that immediately afterwards Abbot passed him. Turvey was also put under pressure, but he was unable to overtake either.
On lap 15, di Grassi pitted with Abt because of a suspension damage as a result of the accident. As a repair was not possible, the team decided to change the vehicle. One lap later, Turvey also slowed down significantly, pitted and changed his vehicle. Lotterer received a drive-through penalty for skipping the chicane from turn three and turn four without stopping at this point as required.
Bird had significantly more energy reserves than Vergne, who now drove much more slowly. On lap 20, Bird passed by and immediately pulled away from Vergne, who, like Rosenqvist, went into the pits to change vehicles. One lap later, Bird, Abt, Heidfeld, Lynn, Jani and Lotterer also changed their vehicles. Bird misjudged himself and slipped past the entrance to his pit tent. A team member standing there could only jump to safety. Since Bird did not drive into the tent afterwards, but got out of the car at this point and walked into the tent to his second racing car, the race management pronounced a drive-through penalty against him for “changing vehicle outside the box assigned to the driver”. He was also given ten starting places for the next race because he had endangered people in the pit lane. At Abt there was a technical problem with the second vehicle that initially could not be started. Abt exceeded the minimum time for changing vehicles by almost 20 seconds.
Another lap later, Buemi, Engel, Piquet, Prost, Filippi and Evans also switched to their second racing car. Buemi's vehicle went out immediately after the vehicle change, Buemi had to restart and lost many places. Another lap later, Félix da Costa, Mortara and Kobayashi, the last drivers to change vehicles, came to the pits.
After the vehicle changes, Bird was leading in front of Vergne, Heidfeld, Engel, Piquet, Rosenqvist, Félix da Costa, Abt, Lynn and Mortara. Heidfeld put Vergne under pressure and attacked him, but Vergne defended himself. As a result, Bird was able to increase his lead so that after the drive-through penalty he came back on the track immediately before Vergne and Heidfeld. Since the journey through the pit lane on the Hong Kong Central Harbourfront Circuit is much shorter than on the track, the drive-through penalty only meant a loss of time of around five seconds. This was heavily criticized after the race in Vergne. Meanwhile, Abt passed Félix da Costa.
Rosenqvist overtook Piquet on lap 31 and then attacked Engel, causing the vehicles to touch. However, both were able to continue the race. Heidfeld continued to put Vergne under pressure, but did not get past. A few laps before the end, the drivers who had changed their vehicle earlier had to save energy. So Piquet, Abt and Félix da Costa managed to overtake Rosenqvist. Mortara passed Lynn shortly before the finish.
Bird won the race ahead of Vergne and Heidfeld. It was Bird's sixth victory in the FIA Formula E Championship. Vergne achieved the tenth and Heidfeld the eighth podium finish in the series, Heidfeld was third for the eighth time. The remaining points were placed by Piquet, Abt, Félix da Costa, Mortara, Lynn, Prost and Filippi.
Engel and Rosenqvist, who had finished the race in fourth and eighth, subsequently received a drive-through penalty that was converted into a 22-second time penalty. In the race they had consumed more than the permitted 180 kW of energy. Both pilots therefore dropped to positions 13 and 14. The point for the fastest lap of the top ten went to Abt. After D'Ambrosio and Rosenqvist, he had achieved the third fastest lap, but neither of them finished in the top ten.
Lotterer was disqualified after the race because, contrary to the rules , he had parked his vehicle ready to drive in the parc fermé .
Race day two
training
On the second day of the race there was only one free practice session. Buemi was fastest with a lap time of 1: 02.002 minutes ahead of Lynn and di Grassi.
Qualifying
Qualifying started at 12:00 p.m. and took place in four groups of five drivers each, each group had six minutes in which the drivers had a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 170 kW and then a maximum of one timed lap with an output of 200 kW were allowed to drive. Evans was fastest with a lap time of 1: 02.577 minutes.
The five fastest drivers then drove in the first five positions in the individual time trial called Superpole . Rosenqvist secured pole position with a lap time of 1: 02.836 minutes and thus three points. The other positions were occupied by Mortara, Bird, Abt and Evans, whose time was canceled due to the use of more than the maximum permitted 200 kW. It was Rosenqvist's fourth pole position in the FIA Formula E Championship.
run
The race went over 45 laps, the race distance was 3.72 km longer than the day before.
The start was delayed because the start lights did not light up due to a technical defect. The race management decided to start the race behind the safety car, which left the track at the end of the first lap.
Rosenqvist braked before the first corner, he spun and had to let several drivers pass. When trying to get back into the field, there was contact with Piquet's car, but both were able to continue the race. In turn two , Rosenqvist and Filippi came into contact in the battle for eleventh place, and Filippi suffered damage to the wheel suspension. Mortara was leading at the end of the second round, ahead of Abt, Evans, Lynn, Félix da Costa, Vergne, Turvey, Piquet, Prost and Bird.
Félix da Costa overtook Lynn on the fourth lap and was now fourth. On the same lap, Bird overtook Prost in the battle for ninth place. Heidfeld stopped in the fifth lap. Although he managed to restart his vehicle, he fell back to the bottom of the field.
Piquet attacked Turvey on lap seven, but braked himself in the process. Since the Bird driving immediately behind him braked himself, so that Prost behind him had to avoid, Rosenqvist took the opportunity and passed Prost, so he was back in the points. On the eleventh lap, Piquet fell back to 14th place with a technical problem. One lap later, Rosenqvist also passed Bird and was now in eighth place.
Di Grassi overtook Prost on lap 14. Rosenqvist closed on Turvey and passed him on the 17th lap. The positions were taken at the front, Mortara was three seconds ahead of Abt, Evans was another seven seconds behind.
On the 21st lap, Jani was the first driver to change vehicles as planned, Buemi followed one lap later. On the 23rd lap, all the other drivers pitted except for Félix da Costa, Lynn and Di Grassi; these three pilots stopped one lap later. Lynn almost ran out of energy on his vehicle and had to slow down at the end of the lap. Di Grassi stopped on the track shortly before the pit entrance. He restarted his vehicle and drove on, but lost almost 30 seconds. Evans and Félix da Costa had technical problems with the second vehicle, so Evans lost five seconds, Félix da Costa even twenty seconds.
After the vehicle changes, Mortara led in front of Abt, Rosenqvist, Evans, Lynn, Vergne, Bird, Turvey, Engel and Prost. Abt was 3.5 seconds behind Mortara, Rosenqvist was another ten seconds behind.
As a result, Rosenqvist set the fastest lap times of the top ten and shortened the gap to Abt to five seconds at the finish. There were no shifts in position. On lap 43, Mortara spun, he dropped to third place behind Abt and Rosenqvist. Lynn ran out of energy a few meters before the finish line, he dropped from fifth to tenth place. Piquet also slowed down in the last corner due to lack of energy, the Lotterer behind him had to swerve and hit the barrier.
Abbot crossed the finish line first, but was disqualified afterwards because there discrepancies between the car pass and on the motor and inverter attached barcodes were. Audi announced that it would appeal the judgment, but then decided not to take this step.
Rosenqvist won the race ahead of Mortara and Evans. It was the second victory for Rosenqvist in the FIA Formula E Championship after the Berlin ePrix 2017 . It was the first podium finish in their careers for Mortara and Evans. It was also the first podium for a Venturi driver since the Long Beach ePrix 2016 and the first ever for a Jaguar driver. The remaining points were placed by Vergne, Bird, Turvey, Engel, Prost, Lynn and Buemi. The point for the fastest lap of the top ten went to Rosenqvist. After di Grassi, Piquet, Kobayashi and Heidfeld, he achieved the fifth fastest lap, but none of them finished in the top ten. After Buemi at the Beijing ePrix 2015, Rosenqvist was the second driver to achieve the best possible scoring in a race by taking pole position and winning the additional point for the fastest race lap. In contrast to Buemi, however, Rosenqvist only received 29 points instead of 30, as there were now only one instead of two additional points for the fastest race lap.
Bird kept the overall lead ahead of Vergne and Rosenqvist. In the team standings, DS Virgin was ahead of Mahindra and Techeetah.
