The 2017/18 ABB FIA Formula E Championship was the fourth season of the FIA Formula E Championship . It began in Hong Kong on December 2, 2017 and ended in New York City on July 15, 2018 . The season consisted of ten E-Prix with twelve races.

Changes in 2017/18

On January 9, 2018, ABB was announced as the new title sponsor of the racing series. This changed the official name from FIA Formula E Championship to ABB FIA Formula E Championship .

New to the calendar were the Rome E-Prix , the Santiago E-Prix , the São Paulo E-Prix and the Zurich E-Prix . Instead, the Buenos Aires E-Prix and the Monaco E-Prix were canceled . In contrast to the previous season, only one race was held as part of the Berlin E-Prix ; instead, the Hong Kong E-Prix now comprised two races. With the elimination of the race in Buenos Aires, the Berlin E-Prix was also the only race that has been held in every season since the championship began.

Shortly before the start of the season, the series organizers announced that the race in São Paulo could not take place as planned and had been postponed to 2019. The reason was that the privatization of Anhembi Park , where the race was to take place, was delayed. Instead, the third edition of the Punta del Este E-Prix , which was last held in 2015 , took place on this date .

In December 2017, the new mayor of Montreal , Valérie Plante , canceled the Montreal E-Prix . The race, which her predecessor Denis Coderre had financed in the previous year entirely from tax revenues equivalent to the equivalent of 26 million euros, had previously been a central topic in the election campaign.

Technical regulations

The maximum power of the vehicles in the race was increased from 170 to 180 kilowatts. The FANBOOST also increased its output by 10 kW, and the driver was now allowed to increase the output to 190 kilowatts.

The maximum power during recuperation has been increased from 150 to 200 kilowatts.

Sporting regulations

The point for the fastest race lap was only awarded to the ten best-placed drivers in the race.

In the case of double headers, the second free practice session was canceled on the second day of the race.

Instead of three film days, the teams were now entitled to six so-called promotion events , three of which were allowed to take place on a circuit. During the season, two test days should also be offered for all teams, one day of which, however, only drivers without Formula E experience could be used.

A team was allowed to name reserve drivers for each race.

In the event of an unsafe release during training, a transfer back to the starting grid of the race could now be pronounced.

In addition, a representative of the race management now had a say in the race stewards, who were also supported by a former driver, as had been the case for years in the Formula 1 World Championship .

In addition, the rules for affixing the start number and the driver's name on the vehicles have changed. The numbers had to be attached to the side of the front wing and the rear fender of the rear tires and had to be at least 14.5 cm high and 3.2 cm wide. The first driver of a team was given a black number, the second driver a red number. The colors at this point should be in the greatest possible contrast to the vehicle color. In addition, the driver's name on the roll bar now had to consist of letters that were at least 10 cm high and 2 cm wide.

Shortly before the start of the season, a change to the qualifying format was announced, the drivers were now drawn into the four qualifying groups only at the first round of the season. In the subsequent races, the five best-placed drivers drove in one group, the second group consisted of the next five best-placed drivers. This procedure was then repeated for the remaining ten drivers. Only the order of the four qualifying groups was drawn.

Shortly before the Marrakech E-Prix , the FIA ​​announced that the minimum time for changing vehicles should be canceled with immediate effect. After the teams expressed safety concerns about the last-minute rule change in a letter to the race stewards, this was postponed to the following race in Santiago on the day before the race .

Teams

In July 2017, Audi took over the Formula E team from Abt . Abt continued to oversee the operations on the racetrack, the team competed under the name Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler . Allan McNish became the new team boss .

After only a year as the title sponsor, Faraday Future no longer appeared in the Dragon Racing team name . In addition, the NIO Formula E team now competed without the addition of NextEV.

driver

Alex Lynn , who competed in the New York City E-Prix for DS Virgin Racing as a reserve driver in the preseason , rose to become the team's regular driver and replaced José María López , whom he had already represented in New York City. Nelson Piquet Jr. after three seasons switched from the NIO Formula E team to Panasonic Jaguar Racing and succeeded Adam Carroll . His successor was Luca Filippi , who made his debut in the FIA ​​Formula E Championship.

Also Neel Jani made his debut in the formula e and was at Dragon Racing successor Loïc Duval . Also André Lotterer made his debut in the series, he replaced Stéphane Sarrazin at Techeetah . With Edoardo Mortara debuted another pilot with Venturi , he replaced Tom Dillmann . Jani and Lotterer were works drivers at Porsche , Mortara at Mercedes - both manufacturers had announced their entry into the FIA ​​Formula E championship for the 2019/20 season . After Dragon Racing was far behind at the end of the field at the Hong Kong E-Prix , Jani announced before the Marrakech E-Prix that he would end the cooperation with the team with immediate effect. López took his place and returned to the FIA ​​Formula E Championship after only two races.

Since BMW also announced its entry into the FIA ​​Formula E championship as a works team and for this reason strengthened its cooperation with Andretti , the team parted ways with Robin Frijns , who had a driver contract in GT racing with Audi , before the season . His successor was BMW works driver Tom Blomqvist , who also makes his debut in the series. At the season opener in Hong Kong, however, Kamui Kobayashi took the place of Blomqvist. The Japanese title sponsor of Andretti, MS&AD Insurance Group , wanted an Asian pilot for the only event in Asia , so Kobayashi could be used there without having previously participated in test drives. Before the Berlin E-Prix , Blomqvist was replaced by Stéphane Sarrazin .

There was a driver change at NIO for the Paris E-Prix : Filippi, who had only scored one point in the season so far and was in 20th place in the drivers' standings, was replaced by NIO substitute driver Ma Qinghua for one race .

At the Berlin E-Prix and the New York City E-Prix, Tom Dillmann replaced Edoardo Mortara , who was competing in the DTM races at the Lausitzring and the Circuit Park Zandvoort at the same time .

Racing calendar

In 2017/18 fourteen races were to be held in eleven cities. On June 19, 2017, the FIA ​​published the racing calendar, but two venues were missing. At one of the two races it was only announced that it would be held in Germany. On September 21, 2017, the final race calendar was confirmed, the two races without previously announced venues took place in Berlin and Zurich.

The race in São Paulo was canceled on November 30, 2017, and a replacement race that had not yet been named was to take place on the same date. A few days later, the organizers announced that the race would take place in Punta del Este. On December 18, 2017, the race in Montreal was canceled. On January 18, 2018, it was announced that there would be no replacement race for Montreal and that the racing calendar would be reduced to twelve races.
