Turn 10 with the grandstand (track layout from 2015)

The Formula E racetrack Berlin (Tempelhof) is a temporary airfield course in Berlin ( Germany ) for Formula E races . On May 23, 2015, a race took place on this track for the first time as part of the FIA Formula E Championship 2014/15 .

On June 10th and 11th, two races were held on the Tempelhofer Feld as part of the Berlin ePrix 2017 , but with a changed route layout. This track layout was also used for Formula E races in the following years with only minor deviations.

history

The organizers of the FIA Formula E Championship originally planned to build a temporary race track on Straße des 17. Juni with the Brandenburg Gate as a backdrop, but the Berlin Senate refused.

The first variant of the route with a length of 2.469 km was designed by Rodrigo Nunes , consisted of 17 curves and led counterclockwise over the apron of the former Berlin-Tempelhof Airport . In the area of curves 13 to 14 and 17 , the route ran under the canopy of the approximately 1.2 kilometer long airport building. Lucas di Grassi finished the race as the winner, but was subsequently disqualified, so that Jérôme D'Ambrosio inherited the victory.

Due to the persistently high number of refugees , the hangars and the covered main hall of the airport were needed for refugee registration and accommodation from the end of 2015. Use for the Berlin ePrix was therefore excluded for 2016. On February 15, 2016, the Formula E organizers announced that the 2016 race would take place on a new racetrack around Strausberger Platz in the Berlin districts of Friedrichshain and Mitte .

In February 2017, the organizers of the FIA Formula E Championship announced that the 2017 race would be held again in the area of the former airport, but with a changed route. Since the number of refugees accommodated there has been greatly reduced, the event can be held without impairing the accommodation of the refugees.

The new route was announced on March 27, 2017. The route is now further away from the hangars and is driven again in an anti-clockwise direction. The length of the route has been shortened to 2.277 km, and the number of curves has been reduced to ten. As a special feature, the route in the area between turn three and four led through a completely covered area, where the VIP grandstand was also located. In the race, every time the leader drove past , two fog machines were used to generate fog clouds at the edge of the track to increase the show effect.

For the Berlin E-Prix 2018 , the layout was again slightly adjusted. The straight before turn six has been lengthened and the curve itself narrowed a little. In addition, the entrance to the pit lane was relocated, instead of being before turn nine , it was now behind turn ten . The route length increased by 100 meters to 2.377 km. This track layout was also used for the Berlin E-Prix 2019 without any major changes .

The Berlin E-Prix 2020 comprised a total of six races due to a last-minute change to the racing calendar as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic . The route for the first four races largely corresponded to the layout of previous years, with the direction of travel reversed in the first two races compared to previous years. The layout was only changed for the last two races by adding another corner after corner four and adding numerous more corners between the original corner six and corner nine , so that there were 16 corners to be driven through within one lap instead of ten.
