Nelson Ângelo Tamsma Piquet Souto Maior , known as Nelson Piquet junior (born July 25, 1985 in Heidelberg , Germany ) is a Brazilian racing driver of Dutch- Brazilian origin. Piquet is the son of three-time Formula 1 world champion Nelson Piquet . It is also called Nelsinho Piquet ( Portuguese for "little Nelson Piquet").
Piquet was South American Formula 3 Champion in 2002 and British Formula 3 Champion in 2004 . In 2005 and 2006 he started in the GP2 series and in 2006 reached second place overall. In 2008 and 2009 he competed in 28 Formula 1 races for Renault . From 2010 to 2016 he competed in several NASCAR series. He won races in the Nationwide Series and the Camping World Truck Series . In 2014/15 he won the FIA Formula E Championship .
Career
Beginnings in motorsport (1993-2002)
Piquet began his motorsport career in karting in 1993 , where he remained active until 2001. In 2001 he got into formula racing and drove for Piquet Sports , his father's racing team, in the South American Formula 3 championship . He won a race in his debut season and finished fifth in the drivers' championship. In 2002 Piquet stayed in the South American Formula 3 Championship and dominated the championship with 13 wins from 17 races. With 296 to 189 he prevailed against the second Danilo Dirani . In addition, in 2002 Piquet drove a race in the Brazilian Formula Renault for Gramacho Racing .
British Formula 3 (2003-2004)
In 2003 Piquet moved to Europe and switched to the British Formula 3 championship . Piquet Sports also got into this series, so that Piquet continued to drive for the family racing team. Piquet was without a teammate. He won six races and was on the podium a total of eleven times. With 231 points, he finished the season in third place overall behind Jamie Green (237 points) and Alan van der Merwe (308 points). In addition, Piquet finished second behind Christian Klien , starting from pole position in the Formula 3 Masters . He contested two more Formula 3 individual events for Hitech Racing . He finished eighth at the Macau Grand Prix , third at the Korea Super Prix and set the fastest race lap. His teammate Richard Antinucci won the Korea Super Prix. Piquet also took part in Formula 1 test drives for Williams for the first time .
In 2004 Piquet played his second season in the British Formula 3 Championship for Piquet Sports, which continued to use only one vehicle. He again won six races and was on the podium 13 times this year. With 282 to 233 points, he won the championship against Adam Carroll . He also competed in four Formula 3 individual races for Piquet Sports. His best place was a fourth place in the European Formula 3 Cup . He also made a guest appearance in the Porsche Supercup in GT racing and again did Formula 1 test drives with Williams.
GP2 series and A1GP (2005-2006)
In 2005 Piquet switched to the newly founded GP2 series and stayed with the family racing team, which initially cooperated with Hitech Racing in the GP2 series and started as HiTech / Piquet Racing . Piquet's teammate became his compatriot Alexandre Negrão . At the main race in Spa-Francorchamps he achieved his first victory. Before that he was already on the podium four times. With 46 points, he finished the season in eighth place in the drivers' championship. Internally, he prevailed against Negrão, who was 19th with four points. This year he completed Formula 1 test drives for British American Racing .
In winter 2005/06 Piquet drove for the Brazilian team supervised by ASM in the A1GP . He contested the first seven race weekends and handed over the cockpit for the last four events to Christian Fittipaldi . Piquet won the first two races at Brands Hatch and was on the podium three more times. Brazil reached sixth place in the team ranking.
In the GP2 series, Piquet and Negrão both stayed with Piquet Sports in 2006 . Piquet scored a victory at the season opener in Valencia . In Mogyoród he won both races and another in Istanbul . Piquet stood on the podium in four other races and was runner-up with 102 points behind Lewis Hamilton , who had scored 114 points. Internally, he again prevailed clearly against Negrão, who was 13th with 13 points. In addition, Piquet took part in two races in GT vehicles in 2006. He won the GTP1 classification at Mil Milhas Brasil and competed for Russian Age Racing with David Brabham and Antonio García in the Le Mans 24-hour race . They achieved ninth place overall.
Formula 1 (2007-2009)
In 2007 Piquet became a Formula 1 test driver at Renault , but did not compete in racing in 2007. For the Formula 1 season 2008 Piquet received a contract as a regular driver at Renault and was teammate of Fernando Alonso , who returned to the team. After Alonso had scored three points in the first seven races, Piquet achieved the first top 10 and points in the eighth race, the French Grand Prix, with a seventh place. At the same time, he crossed the finish line for the first time before Alonso. Two races later in Germany , Piquet achieved his first podium finish in Formula 1 with a second place. He benefited from a favorable safety car phase, during which pit stops were forbidden this year. Piquet had already pitted and took the lead after the other drivers had made their pit stop. He was then only overtaken by Hamilton.
At the Singapore Grand Prix , Piquet's accident triggered a safety car phase that was favorable for his team-mate Alonso, which brought Alonso to the top and ultimately helped him to race victory. After Piquet was fired by Renault a year later, he went public and announced that the Renault team leadership around team principal Flavio Briatore , who was also Piquet's manager, and chief engineer Pat Symonds , had urged him to intentionally cause the accident. This affair has been dubbed the Crashgate by the media . Renault and Briatore initially denied the allegations, accusing Piquet and his father of publishing false accusations and blackmailing the team, and threatening Piquet and his father with a lawsuit. However, Briatore and Symonds were fired from Renault a few days later and Renault took no legal action. Renault was later sentenced to a two-year suspended sentence by the FIA. Briatore and Symonds have been banned from all FIA events. Briatore for an unlimited period, Symonds for five years. Piquet himself came out of the affair with impunity. The bans against Briatore and Symonds were lifted a few months later by a French court because the ban was irregular due to legal irregularities. Two years after the accident, Piquet and his father won a lawsuit against the Renault racing team, which they had accused of false testimony and extortion. Piquet received substantial compensation and was apologized during the legal process.
A race after the Singapore Grand Prix in Japan , Piquet achieved his second-best result of the season with fourth place, while Alonso won again. Piquet finished the season with 19 points in twelfth place overall and was thus internally defeated by Alonso, who was fifth with 61 points.
In 2009 Piquet stayed with Renault in Formula 1 and again formed a driver duo with Alonso. After Piquet had not scored any points in the first ten races and a tenth place was his best result, while Alonso had been in the points five times and had achieved a pole position, he was dismissed with immediate effect after the Hungarian Grand Prix and replaced by Romain Grosjean . Renault Piquets gave disappointing driving performance as the reason for the separation. At the end of the season, Piquet was in 21st place overall. For the 2010 Formula 1 season , Piquet did not find a cockpit. He later announced that he had negotiated a cockpit with Force India .
NASCAR (2010-2013)
In 2010 Piquet switched to the US NASCAR scene. He drove one race in the Camping World Truck Series for Red Horse Racing and three races in the ARCA Racing Series for Eddie Sharp Racing . He then competed for Billy Ballew Motorsports four races in the Camping World Truck Series and he took part in the rest of the season for Baker Curb Racing in a Nationwide Series . Piquet achieved at least one top 10 placement in each of the three series. In addition, he made two guest starts in the European International GT Open , where he crossed the finish line first.
In 2011 Piquet received a regular cockpit in the Camping World Truck Series at Kevin Harvick Incorporated . He achieved two podiums and was tenth in the drivers' championship. He also competed in a Nationwide Series race for Turner Motorsports . In 2012 Piquet switched to Turner Motorsports within the Camping World Truck Series. He won two races and improved to seventh place in the drivers' standings. With his first victory at the VFW 200 at Michigan International Speedway , he was the second non-American to win a NASCAR race on an oval after the Canadian Earl Ross in 1974. His second win was at Smith's 350 in Las Vegas . In the Nationwide Series he contested two races for Turner Motorsports. He won the Sargento 200 on Road America . In addition, Piquet completed two races for X Team Racing in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East , where he won one. Piquet also competed in a sports car race in the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge .
In 2013, Piquet stayed with Turner Motorsports and received a full-time cockpit in the Nationwide Series. Eighth place was his best result and he was twelfth in the drivers' championship. He also completed two races in the Camping World Truck Series for Turner Motorsport and competed for Action Express Racing in a race in the Rolex Sports Car Series .
Blancpain Sprint Series and FIA Formula E Championship (2014 to 2019)
In 2014 , Piquets competed in GT racing for the BMW Sports Trophy Team Brasil, which is managed by AH Competições , at four of seven events in the Blancpain Sprint Series . Eighth place was his best result and he was 25th in the drivers' championship. Moreover, he returned for a race in the NASCAR scene back and made his debut for Randy Humphrey Racing in Sprint Cup . He also made a guest start in Stock Car Brasil . In rallycross , Piquet was active in the Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship in 2014 and finished fourth overall. In addition, Piquet returned to formula racing for the 2014/15 season and received a cockpit in the newly founded FIA Formula E championship for the China Racing team , which was supervised by Campos and which was renamed the NEXTEV TCR Formula E Team during the season . At the season opener, the Beijing ePrix , he finished eighth. In the third race in Punta del Este , he achieved his first podium finish with second place. The next race, the Buenos Aires ePrix, was followed by another podium finish with third place. In the sixth race in Long Peach , Piquet won the Formula E for the first time. In the next race in Monaco , he was third again. Two races later, Piquet scored his second win at the Moscow ePrix . Piquet went into the final race weekend in London as championship leader , where two races were held. Places five and seven were ultimately enough to win the title. Piquet prevailed against Sébastien Buemi with 144 to 143 points and became the first Formula E champion. In order to gain more practice on street circuits, he competed in two Indy Lights races for Carlin in mid-June 2015 . He achieved a pole position. In 2015 Piquet also completed IndyCar test drives for Penske . In 2015, Piquet also took part in a Stock Car Brasil race as a guest starter and again came fourth in the Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship.
In the 2015/16 FIA Formula E Championship , Piquet competed again for NEXTEV TCR in Formula E. His team could no longer build on the successes of the previous year. Piquet's best finish was eighth. He finished the season one position behind his teammate Oliver Turvey in 15th place overall. In addition, Piquet competed in three races of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) for Rebellion Racing in 2016 and he drove one race in the NASCAR Xfinity Series and two races in the Brazilian Porsche GT3 Endurance Cup.
For the 2016/17 season , Piquet stayed with NextEV in Formula E. At the season opener in Hong Kong , he achieved pole position. He finished eleventh in the race. In Buenos Aires , Mexico City , Monaco and Paris he was able to achieve points. With 33 points, he finished eleventh overall.
For the 2017/18 season he switched to Jaguar Racing within the FIA Formula E Championship . He finished the season in ninth place overall. Even 2018/19 Piquet came back to Jaguar. However, after the Sanya E-Prix , Piquet and Jaguar split with immediate effect. With one point he finished 22nd in the drivers' championship at the end of the season.
Personal
Nelson Piquet junior is a child of three-time Formula 1 world champion Nelson Piquet and Sylvia Tamsma from the Netherlands . He has two sisters and four half brothers. One of them is the racing car driver Pedro Piquet . Nelson Piquet Jr. was born in Germany in Heidelberg , as his mother accompanied her husband during the Formula 1 races in Europe and was already in Germany in the run-up to the German Grand Prix , which took place on August 4, 1985. Piquet grew up in Monaco with his mother, who left his father shortly after his birth, until he was eight, and moved to Brazil to live with his father when he was eight.
