The 1985 German Grand Prix took place on August 4th at the Nürburgring and was the ninth race of the 1985 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

After the Formula 1 premiere on the Nürburgring Grand Prix track last year in the form of the European Grand Prix , a German Grand Prix was held in the Eifel for the first time since 1976 . For the time being, however, there was an exception, because in the following years the race was held at the Hockenheimring again . It was not until 2009 that the Nürburgring was again the venue for the German World Championship run.

Renault fielded a third works car for François Hesnault in the race , which, however, was not eligible for points according to the new regulations. It was the last time that a Formula 1 team with more than two cars took part in a Grand Prix. In order to be able to start out of competition, as it were, those responsible decided to experiment and for the first time had an onboard camera mounted on a Formula 1 car, which was supposed to transmit live images during the race. This camera was a relatively bulky device compared to today's technology. In the past, such cameras were only used occasionally during training. However, they did not have the technology of live transmission, but only recorded the images.

At Osella there was a change in the line-up at short notice compared to the printed program: Piercarlo Ghinzani had to vacate his place in favor of paydriver Huub Rothengatter .

training

Toleman driver Teo Fabi surprised the experts not only by reaching pole position, but above all by completing his best lap almost 1.2 seconds faster than Stefan Johansson in a Ferrari, who was second on the grid . McLaren -Pilot Alain Prost and Keke Rosberg at Williams formed the second row in front of the Lotus of Ayrton Senna and the Brabham of Nelson Piquet . So there were six different vehicles on the first six starting positions.

As it was raining on Saturday, all the pilots except Pierluigi Martini qualified with their lap times achieved during the first qualifying training on Friday.

run

Fabi started badly, so that Johansson took the lead, but was overtaken by Rosberg in the first corner on the outside lane and almost simultaneously by Senna on the inside. Michele Alboreto tried to follow Senna on the inside lane, but collided with his team-mate Johansson, and his front wing caused a tire damage on his car.

At the end of the first lap, Rosberg was ahead of Senna and Alboreto as well as Elio de Angelis , Alain Prost, Nelson Piquet, Nigel Mansell and Teo Fabi. On the third lap, Mansell passed Piquet. Then the order of the first eight remained constant until the 16th lap. Then Senna took over the lead, but had to retire ten laps later because of a broken drive shaft. Shortly before, Piquet had already retired with a technical problem. Fabi and de Angelis followed shortly afterwards.

Rosberg was able to defend the lead until the 45th lap and was then overtaken by both Alboreto and Prost. Jacques Laffite quickly caught up with Nigel Mansell, who was fourth at the time . Between the 56th and 64th lap, the two dueled for fourth place, with positions changing several times. Meanwhile, Rosberg had to give up the race with braking problems.

In the end, Jacques Laffite was third behind Michele Alboreto and Alain Prost. In the final phase, Nigel Mansell fell back to sixth place behind Thierry Boutsen and Niki Lauda due to a damage to the turbocharger .
