Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. At the beginning of the section, the track was still damp in several places, but then dried off quickly. Hamilton had to park his vehicle at the edge of the track shortly before the end with a hydraulic defect. Raikkonen was fastest. Vandoorne, Stroll, the Scuderia Toro Rosso pilots and Esteban Ocon were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. Bottas was the fastest. Hamilton, who did not drive time after his defect in this section, Ricciardo, Ericsson, Sirotkin and Alonso were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. With a lap time of 1: 11.212 minutes, Vettel drove the best time ahead of Bottas and Raikkonen. It was the 55th pole position for Vettel in the Formula 1 World Championship and the fastest lap time ever recorded on this racetrack.

Ricciardo was relegated to the bottom of the field this season because of the use of the third MGU-K , the third energy storage device and the third control electronics. Gasly was also moved back to the bottom of the field this season because of the use of the fifth internal combustion engine, the fifth turbocharger , the fifth MGU-H , the fourth MGU-K, the third energy storage device and the third control electronics.

run

The race started in dry conditions. After the start, Vettel led the field in front of Hamilton and his Mercedes team-mate Bottas. In lap three, Raikkonen informed his team over the radio that it was starting to trickle easily. Of the front runners, Raikkonen was the first to make a pit stop on lap 14 and switch to the soft tires. That early pit stop indicated that he was pursuing a two-stop strategy. On the same lap, Hamilton overtook Kevin Magnussen and finished fifth. On lap 20 Ricciardo came in tenth. On lap 26, Vettel had a fresh tire mix put on his Ferrari. Vettel came onto the track behind team-mate Raikkonen, but stayed ahead of fifth Hamilton. The front-runners stayed in shape until lap 26, when race director Vettel made his pit stop and came home fourth. Before Bottas sat in the pits on the following lap and brought Vettel back to third place behind Raikkonen. For Daniel Ricciardo, the race was over shortly afterwards. The two-time winner of the season had to park his Red Bull in sixth place because of an engine failure. It was his fourth retirement this year. After Ricciardo's stable rival Max Verstappen also pitted, Raikkonen took the lead in front of Vettel. Behind was Hamilton, who, unlike the Scuderia duo, had not yet had a tire change. It started raining on lap 44. Fernando Alonso Pierre Gasly and Charles Leclerc then pitted first to put on the rain tires. Lying in the lead, Vettel and his Ferrari came into the track barrier 15 laps before the end and drove into the guard rail, while the safety car drove onto the track. As a result of the safety car, Valtteri Bottas made a pit stop on lap 53. The race was released again on lap 58. Hamilton won the race ahead of Bottas and Raikkonen. The remaining points were placed by Verstappen, Hülkenberg, Grosjean, Pérez, Ocon, Ericsson and Hartley. Sainz crossed the finish line in tenth, but received a penalty and was classified in twelfth place.
