backgrounds

After the French Grand Prix , Lewis Hamilton led the drivers' standings with 14 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel and 49 points ahead of Daniel Ricciardo . In the constructors' championship, Mercedes led Ferrari with 23 points and Red Bull Racing with 73 points .

At the Austrian Grand Prix, Pirelli provided the drivers with the tire compounds P Zero Soft (yellow), P Zero Supersoft (red), P Zero Ultrasoft (purple), as well as Cinturato Intermediates (green) and Cinturato Full Wets (blue) for wet conditions .

There were two changes to the route compared to the previous year, which were made for safety reasons. At the request of MotoGP , the run-off zone on the left edge of the Remus lane was enlarged. In addition, the opening in the track boundary for the recovery of broken-down vehicles was moved further back in the Schlossgold .

For the first time there were three DRS zones on this route. The first, newly established zone began 102 meters after the Castrol Edge , the measuring point of this zone was on the start-finish straight , 160 meters before the curve. The second zone began exactly 100 meters after the Remus , the measuring point was 40 meters before this curve. The third zone was on the start-finish straight and began 106 meters after the Red Bull Mobile , the distance between the vehicles was measured 151 meters before the curve.

Marcus Ericsson , (seven), Romain Grosjean , Kevin Magnussen , Max Verstappen (five each), Brendon Hartley , Sergei Sirotkin (four each), Kimi Räikkönen , Sergio Pérez , Stoffel Vandoorne (three each), Pierre Gasly , Nico Hülkenberg , Daniel Ricciardo , Vettel (two each) and Lance Stroll (one) went into the race weekend with penalty points.

With Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas (one each), two former winners took part in this Grand Prix.

Race stewards were Silvia Bellot (ESP), Garry Connelly (AUS), Walter Jobst (AUT) and Derek Warwick (GBR).

free training

In the first free practice, Hamilton was fastest with a lap time of 1: 04.839 minutes ahead of Bottas and Verstappen.

In the second free practice, Hamilton was again fastest in 1: 04.579 minutes ahead of Bottas and Vettel. The training was interrupted by Gasly after an accident.

In the third free practice session, Vettel set the fastest time in 1: 04.070 minutes ahead of Hamilton and Bottas.

Qualifying

The qualifying consisted of three parts with a net running time of 45 minutes. In the first qualifying segment (Q1), the drivers had 18 minutes to qualify for the race. All drivers who achieved a time in the first section that was a maximum of 107 percent of the fastest lap time qualified for the Grand Prix. The best 15 drivers reached the next part. Hamilton was fastest. Ericsson, Hartley, Sirotkin, Pérez and Vandoorne were eliminated.

The second section (Q2) lasted 15 minutes. The ten fastest pilots qualified for the third part of qualifying. The Mercedes and Red Bull drivers drove their fastest lap on the Supersoft compound, all others on Ultrasoft . Vettel was fastest. Stroll, Alonso, Charles Leclerc , Gasly and Esteban Ocon were eliminated.

The final section (Q3) lasted twelve minutes, during which the first ten starting positions were awarded. With a lap time of 1: 03.130 minutes, Bottas set the fastest time ahead of Hamilton and Vettel. It was the fifth pole position for Bottas in the Formula 1 World Championship and the fastest lap time ever recorded on this racetrack.

Leclerc was moved five positions back due to a premature gear change. Vettel was relegated three places on the grid because he had stopped Sainz on his fast lap in Q2. Alonso had to start from the pit lane because the MGU-K and the front wing on his car were changed after qualifying . Hartley has been moved to the bottom of the field to use the fifth internal combustion engine, fifth turbocharger , fifth MGU-H, and fourth MGU-K this season.

run

Hamilton and Raikkonen overtook Bottas, who had started from pole, at the start. In turn one, Raikkonen drove through the run-off zone, but did not lose any positions. Vettel also drove through the run-off zone and thus lost two places to Magnussen and Ricciardo. When approaching turn two, Verstappen passed Bottas. Raikkonen wanted to pass Hamilton on the outside of turn two, but braked himself in the process, had to go through the run-off zone and barely lost any position. Vandoorne collided with Gasly at turn two and damaged his front wing. Due to the necessary stop, he fell back to last place. On the approach to turn three, Bottas passed both of them in the double slipstream of Verstappen and Raikkonen. Ricciardo overtook Grosjean in turn three. In turn six, Verstappen then overtook Raikkonen.

At the end of the first lap, Hamilton was leading in front of Bottas, Verstappen, Räikkönen, Ricciardo, Grosjean, Magnussen, Vettel, Hülkenberg and Ocon. Vettel overtook Magnussen on lap two and passed Grosjean one lap later.

Sainz and Perez first overtook Stroll and were 11th and 12th, catching up with Hülkenberg and Ocon. On lap 12, Hulkenberg reported a loss of performance in his Renault. This resulted in an engine failure, whereby he was eliminated. Shortly thereafter, Perez overtook Sainz for 10th place.

On lap 14 Bottas suffered a hydraulic damage while lying in second place, causing him to suffer transmission problems. As a result, he retired and brought his car to a stop on turn three. The race management sent the virtual safety car out onto the track to rescue the car. Both Red Bull and both Ferrari drivers as well as Grosjean, Ocon and Sainz used this to switch from Supersoft or Ultrasoft to Soft. The gap to Hamilton in first place, who was not in the pits, was 13 seconds for Verstappen. That would put him in front of him at a Hamilton pit stop. Raikkonen and Ricciardo would also be ahead of him after Hamilton stopped. Vettel would be just behind Hamilton, 22 seconds behind. In addition, Vettel came back on the track behind Magnussen. After the VSC end, Vettel passed Magnussen directly. Ricciardo drove the fastest lap with new tires and put pressure on Raikkonen.

On lap 20 Raikkonen braked himself in turn two, whereby Ricciardo caught up and in the slipstream with DRS passed Raikkonen. While Vettel continued to catch up, Hamilton pitted on lap 26 and switched to soft. He came back on the track just before Vettel. The now leader Verstappen then had a four-second lead over Ricciardo. Räikkönen, Hamilton, Vettel, Magnussen, Perez, Grosjean, Ocon and Sainz followed on the other places. Vettel then drove the fastest lap.

Magnussen and Perez pitted shortly afterwards. While Perez came back on track behind Sainz, Magnussen came back on track in front of Sainz.

On lap 34 Raikkonen reported a blistering in Ricciardo, which led to traction problems for him. Sainz then had to pit again and came back on track in 17th place. On lap 38 Raikkonen then attacked Ricciardo in turn two, but had to back off. On the approach to turn three, he passed Ricciardo on the outside with DRS. He then came to the pits and switched to Supersoft. He came back on track in fifth ahead of Grosjean.

On lap 39, Vettel then attacked Hamilton and passed Hamilton on the inside when approaching turn two and then pulled away. Raikkonen was 7 seconds off Verstappen. Hamilton also had problems with his tires and pitted again on lap 53 and switched to Supersoft. He came back on the track in fifth behind Ricciardo. Ricciardo retired one lap later, however, with problems. Hamilton was 22 seconds short of Vettel. Thus, in the 54th lap, Verstappen led ahead of Raikkonen, Vettel, Hamilton, Grosjean, Magnussen, Ocon, Perez and Gasly and Hartley.

On lap 56 Hartley retired in 10th place with mechanical problems. Leclerc moved into the points and he and Ericsson caught up with Gasly. On lap 63, Hamilton also suffered a loss of power and parked his car. This was the first time Hamilton was eliminated since the 2016 Malaysian Grand Prix. Raikkonen then drove the fastest lap several times and caught up with Verstappen for several seconds, who was also slowly suffering from tire problems. Vettel also drove lap times that were similar to Räikkönens and caught up on Verstappen.

Alonso passed Gasly on lap 65 and moved into eighth place. One lap later, Leclerc passed Gasly in turn three and shortly thereafter Ericsson too. Raikkonen then drove the fastest lap several times and set a new course record and continued to catch up with Verstappen. The lead fell from 7 to 1.5 seconds. Vettel's lead also fell from 9 to 3 seconds. But they couldn't quite get to Verstappen.

Verstappen won the race ahead of Raikkonen and Vettel. Verstappen won a race for the first time since the 2017 Mexican Grand Prix and Red Bull for the first time in Austria. The remaining points were placed by Grosjean, Magnussen, Ocon, Pérez, Alonso, Leclerc and Ericsson. For the first time since the Monaco Grand Prix in 2017, there was no Mercedes driver on the podium. For the first time since the Spanish Grand Prix in 2016, both Mercedes drivers were eliminated and the first time since the Spanish Grand Prix in 2017 that Bottas did not make it into the final ranking of a race. In addition, this was the first time since 2003 that no Mercedes won in Austria, although there was no Austrian Grand Prix between 2004 and 2013. For Vettel and Räikkönen it was the second podium place in Austria. Raikkonen also drove the 46th fastest race lap.

In the overall standings, Vettel took the lead ahead of Hamilton and Raikkonen. In the constructors' championship, Ferrari was now ahead of Mercedes and Red Bull Racing.
