report
training
Friday training
Heinz-Harald Frentzen set the fastest time with 1: 11.527 in front of Jacques Villeneuve , Rubens Barrichello and Giancarlo Fisichella . Michael Schumacher was around seven tenths behind the fastest time in seventh place.
All drivers were within three and a half seconds.
Saturday training
Surprisingly, Pedro Diniz set the fastest time with 1: 10.782 ahead of Jan Magnussen , who was only three thousandths behind. Villeneuve had to admit defeat by 16 thousandths and was in third place, Schumacher again in seventh place. What is remarkable is the density of the times in the first six, all of which were only a tenth behind the fastest time.
All drivers were within three seconds.
Qualifying
Villeneuve set the fastest time ahead of Mika Häkkinen and Jarno Trulli . His competitor for the world championship, Michael Schumacher, is in ninth place, around seven tenths behind.
All drivers were placed within four seconds. Tarso Marques would have qualified for 21st place, but was subsequently excluded from the Formula 1 weekend because his car was underweight.
Warm-up
Häkkinen was the fastest with 1: 12.803, Trulli and Michael Schumacher just behind.
All drivers were within five seconds.
run
Häkkinen won the start and led the race in front of Trulli for not even a lap because his engine went up in flames after the Jochen Rindt corner. Trulli inherited the leadership.
On lap 37 there was a spectacular accident between Eddie Irvine and Jean Alesi . Fighting for position four, Alesi tried to slow down Northern Ireland. However, with Alesi far behind, Irvine expected no attack, and as a result Alesi sped almost unchecked into Irvine. The Benetton rose and slid over the Ferrari. As a result of the accident, Alesi was observed by the stewards for dangerous driving, but there was no penalty.
On the same lap, Trulli's Mugen-Honda engine also went up while in the lead. As a result, Villeneuve got first place again, but only for two laps. This time, however, the reason was a pit stop. Schumacher was able to lead for two laps, then had to stop on lap 42 as well. Coulthard was now in the lead, but had to refuel on the following lap, after which Villeneuve came back to the front.
Michael Schumacher was safely in third place when he received a stop-and-go penalty for overtaking under yellow. Schumacher later said that he had not seen the yellow flags because they were not visible on the inside of the curve.
Villeneuve was able to cross the finish line and took another victory, reducing his gap to Schumacher to one point.
