run
The pre-start to the introductory lap went smoothly for all pilots. At the start of the race, however, four drivers remained standing: Häkkinen, Nick Heidfeld , and both Jordan drivers Jarno Trulli and Heinz-Harald Frentzen. In order to clear the start-finish straight , the cars were first pushed into the pit lane . Frentzen had to give up his race in the pits. Trulli, Heidfeld and Häkkinen managed to resume the race, but Häkkinen retired after a lap with technical problems. Trulli left the pit while the pit lights were still red and was disqualified on lap 14.
At the start of the field there were changes in position. Both Williams drivers overtook Michael Schumacher. Due to the broken down vehicles, the safety car was sent out. It led Montoya ahead of Ralf Schumacher, Michael Schumacher, Barrichello and Coulthard. Irvine got off to a good start from 13th position, and after one lap he was already in sixth place.
When restarting after the third lap, Arrows driver Jos Verstappen managed to take over sixth position from Irvine. Michael Schumacher, meanwhile, put pressure on his brother driving in front of him. After his overtaking maneuver, Verstappen quickly caught up with Coulthard and overtook him on lap four.
On lap six, Verstappen had also approached Barrichello and tried several times to overtake him. Meanwhile, the two leaders managed to break away from the field. Irvine, now in eighth position, was under pressure from the two BAR pilots Olivier Panis and Jacques Villeneuve, as well as the second Arrows pilot Enrique Bernoldi . Panis overtook Irvine on the seventh lap and then pulled away. Bernoldi also passed Irvine one lap later. When Villeneuve tried to overtake, he spun and lost several positions.
On lap ten, Ralf Schumacher drove into the pit lane in second position. He said over the pit radio that it was too unsafe for him to continue driving due to braking problems.
Meanwhile, the first four of the race drove close together. Coulthard and Kimi Raikkonen behind them drove faster and were able to catch up.
After several attempts by Schumacher to overtake, there was a near collision with Montoya on lap 15 when Schumacher started to overtake on the outside lane. Both slipped off the racing line and were overtaken by their pursuers. After this maneuver, Schumacher was in sixth, Montoya in seventh.
While Bernoldi parked his car in the pits on lap 17, Michael Schumacher set the fastest lap times and quickly caught up with Panis - although he was unable to overtake him.
On lap 23, Verstappen was the first of the leaders to pit. One lap later, Panis made a driving error, Schumacher was able to drive past him and catch up with Raikkonen, which he overtook on lap 27.
After 30 laps, Barrichello is in front of Coulthard, Michael Schumacher, Raikkonen, Panis and Montoya.
On lap 36, Montoya passed Panis. Six laps later, however, his Williams suddenly slowed, and shortly afterwards he gave up the race. The first three placed themselves together - there were only two seconds between Barrichello and Schumacher.
On lap 45, Schumacher came into the pits first in the leading group. A lap later, Barrichello made his only pit stop and came back on the track before his teammate. Coulthard now drove faster times than the Ferrari drivers, on lap 48 even the fastest lap of the race and pitted three laps after Barrichello. The lead that was extended was enough to maintain the lead after his stop.
Thus, after the pit stops, Coulthard was ahead of Barrichello, Schumacher, Räikkönen, Panis and Verstappen.
With eight laps to go, Jenson Button retired with engine failure.
One lap before the finish, Barrichello received the instruction from Ferrari team boss Jean Todt : " Let Michael pass for the championship " over the pit radio, the radio message was broadcast live on television. Barrichello followed the instructions and left Schumacher second by driving slowly on the home straight.
Coulthard won the race ahead of Michael Schumacher and Barrichello. The remaining points went to Raikkonen, Panis and Verstappen.
