The two Williams drivers finished the second free practice session in the front seats. Ralf Schumacher was faster than his teammate Juan Pablo Montoya and Barrichello.
Qualifying
Michael Schumacher won qualifying. He took pole position in front of his brother Ralf. Montoya secured third place on the grid.
Warm up
In the warm up, Barrichello set the fastest time ahead of Michael and Ralf Schumacher.
run
The start of the race went without any major problems for everyone involved. At the head of the field, Michael Schumacher maintained his lead over his younger brother Ralf. Barrichello, who started the race from fourth place, started poorly and fell back to seventh place behind Jarno Trulli . After the first lap, Michael led ahead of Ralf Schumacher, Montoya, Coulthard, Häkkinen and Trulli.
In the first few laps the field expanded. Only Barrichello was able to follow the man in front and exert pressure. On the eighth lap, Tarso Marques was the first driver to end the race prematurely. His Minardi had problems with electronics.
From lap eleven onwards, Ralf Schumacher suddenly drove faster lap times until, on lap 17, he was driving directly behind his brother and exerting pressure. By then, the two were far ahead of the rest of the field. However, since Ralf did not come by, Montoya gradually caught up with the duo.
On lap 29, the two leaders went into the pits at the same time. The Ferrari team's pit stop was a little shorter, so Michael came back out on the track before his brother. Meanwhile, Montoya had taken the lead. However, he gave it up again on the following lap, as he also made his first pit stop. Shortly afterwards, Ralf Schumacher received a stop-and-go penalty because he had driven over the white lane markings on the exit of the pit lane. After completing the penalty, Ralf Schumacher was fourth behind Coulthard.
On lap 44, Trulli slowed and had to give up his race prematurely - his Jordan had a gearbox defect. Meanwhile, Michael Schumacher drove faster than the rest of the field and increased his lead. Similar to the start of the race, the pursuer in the Williams, in this case Montoya, drove faster than Michael Schumacher after a few laps and again reduced the lead. However, until the next pit stops, Montoya had not been able to get close enough to attempt to overtake. The two leaders pitted on the same lap. Michael Schumacher did not lose his lead this time and did not give it up until the end. During the lap of honor after the race, some fans climbed over the fence and bowed as Schumacher drove by.
Michael Schumacher achieved his 49th Grand Prix victory ahead of Montoya and Coulthard and increased his lead in the world championship by six points. The remaining points went to Ralf Schumacher, Barrichello and Häkkinen.
