Reports
background
After the Canadian Grand Prix, all teams made the return trip to Europe on time. Nevertheless, there were a few changes in the field of participants.
Last year's winner Ludovico Scarfiotti was looking for a cockpit for a guest start and found it in Dan Gurney's Eagle team , as Ferrari again competed with only one works car, as in most of the previous races of the current season. With Giancarlo Baghetti there was a second local guest starter, in this case at the wheel of a third factory Lotus .
The Honda factory team skipped the overseas trip in order to complete the development of the new RA300 , which was now being used for the first time in Monza with factory driver John Surtees at the wheel. Due to its structural similarity to an Indy 500 racing car from Lola , the new car was jokingly referred to as the "Hondola" by the trade press.
Since Pedro Rodríguez continued injury sidelined had, they gave in Cooper -Werksteam the Belgian Jacky Ickx the chance to make his debut in a Formula 1 car, having previously been five weeks as Formula 2 -Pilot at the Grand Prix of Germany competition and had convinced there with good performance.
training
For the fourth time in a row, Jim Clark secured pole position in the Lotus 49 . For the Lotus works team, this was the seventh consecutive pole this season. With Jack Brabham and Bruce McLaren , two drivers of their own designs occupied the other two places on the front row. Chris Amon qualified fourth in the Ferrari 312 and Dan Gurney in the Eagle T1G qualified fifth. Thus, one of the most successful racing cars of the season was among the top five starting positions.
This was followed by Denny Hulme , Jackie Stewart and Graham Hill in the third row.
run
The race began with a misunderstanding between the starter and some pilots, who interpreted his pre-start sign as clearance for the race. This led to a confusion between drivers who were still slowly rolling onto their starting positions and those who were already accelerating fully. As there was no accident despite this delicate situation, the start was not canceled.
Brabham first took the lead, but was overtaken by Gurney on lap two. Hill followed ahead of Clark, McLaren, Stewart and Hulme. Towards the end of lap three, Clark took the lead and Hill moved up to second after Gurney retired with an engine failure. Hulme was able to keep the pace of the two Lotus and even take the lead for a short time before he was ousted from this position by Clark shortly afterwards.
On lap 13, Clark was forced to make a pit stop due to a puncture. His mechanics weren't prepared for this. When he got back on the track, he was one lap behind Hill, now leading. This was followed by one of the most striking catch-up races in Formula 1 history. Benefiting from slipstream duels, the Scot rounded back within a few laps and once again joined the top group, the leader of which also changed several times due to slipstream maneuvers. On lap 31, the leading Hulme in the world championship had to give up the race due to an overheated engine.
Towards the end of the race, Clark overtook third-placed Surtees. Due to the technical failure of Hill, he came in second and finally took the lead again with an overtaking maneuver against Brabham. Surtees also overtook the Australian.
Clark started the final lap as the leader, but ran out of gas on the last long straight. Surtees and Brabham then dueled for victory in the Parabolica for the last few meters of the race. Surtees finally won by half a car length and thus directly achieved its first and only victory at the premiere of the RA300. Clark rolled over the finish line in third place around 23 seconds later.
