Reports
background
Thierry Boutsen , who ended his Formula 1 career after ten years, was replaced at Jordan by the newcomer Marco Apicella . The injured Alessandro Zanardi was represented for Team Lotus by Pedro Lamy , who also made his Formula 1 debut.
training
Alain Prost and Damon Hill qualified for the front row ahead of Jean Alesi and Ayrton Senna . Michael Schumacher took fifth place on the grid ahead of Gerhard Berger , who survived a violent impact on the track barrier, which was secured with tire stacks, due to a misunderstanding with his team-mate Alesi in the final minutes of qualifying.
run
While Prost took the lead from Alesi, Hill collided with Senna in the first corner, but both were able to continue the race for the time being. Another collision with Berger caused Hill to drop to ninth place. Further back in the field, Derek Warwick , Aguri Suzuki , JJ Lehto , Marco Apicella and Rubens Barrichello were also eliminated due to collisions, Christian Fittipaldi and Pedro Lamy had to head to their pits to have repairs carried out.
In the fourth lap, Schumacher passed Alesi to take second place. Hill fought his way back to third place by lap 10, while Ayrton Senna and Martin Brundle had to retire after a collision.
On the 22nd lap, Schumacher retired due to an engine failure. Prost thus led in front of Hill, Alesi and Berger. Riccardo Patrese followed in sixth place.
After Alain Prost retired on lap 49 due to engine failure, Damon Hill won for the third time in a row. Jean Alesi finished second ahead of Michael Andretti , who achieved the first and only podium finish of his Formula 1 career. Karl Wendlinger took fourth place ahead of Riccardo Patrese and Érik Comas . The two Minardi drivers Christian Fittipaldi and Pierluigi Martini dueled for seventh place in the last few meters of the race . While trying to overtake his team mate on the home stretch, Fittipaldi crashed into his rear wheel at high speed. His car took off and overturned, but landed back on its wheels and rolled over the finish line.
