The 1973 Italian Grand Prix took place in Monza on September 9th and was the thirteenth race of the 1973 Automobile World Championship .
Reports
background
For the home Grand Prix Ferrari returned to the starting field as a two-car team by taking Jacky Ickx under contract for this one race. In addition, Niki Lauda was able to return to the start for BRM after his injury-related break .
Both the March factory team with driver Jean-Pierre Jarier and the Tecno team with regular driver Chris Amon decided against participating in the race weekend because they were convinced that they were not competitive anyway.
training
James Hunt had a serious accident during training. Although he had previously achieved a lap time that would have been enough for qualification, he had to give up the start as a result of the accident.
Alongside Ronnie Peterson , who secured pole position for the seventh time this season, McLaren driver Peter Revson qualified for the front row. In the row behind the two started their teammates, namely Denis Hulme and Emerson Fittipaldi . Carlos Pace shared the third row with World Cup favorite Jackie Stewart .
run
Peterson took the lead ahead of Fittipaldi, Hulme, Stewart and Revson. To the great disappointment of the spectators, the local hero Arturo Merzario retired in the Ferrari after the second lap due to a driving error. He had damaged a wheel suspension by driving over the curbs too hard . A little later, Hulme had to make a pit stop because of a similar problem, as did Stewart, who, however, had to change tires because of a flat tire. This brought Revson to third place. The order of the three podium finishers did not change until the finish.
Stewart caused a stir with an impressive race to catch up. In the end, he reached fourth place. This enabled him to win the drivers' world championship prematurely, as Peterson had won ahead of his teammate Fittipaldi and he no longer had the opportunity to catch up with Stewart's points lead in the remaining two races. The joy of the Lotus team about the first double victory since the Grand Prix of South Africa in 1968 was correspondingly small.
