Frederick "Rikky" von Opel (born October 14, 1947 in New York City ) is a former racing car driver from the Opel family . So far he is the only Formula 1 racing driver who competed for Liechtenstein .

Career

Rikky von Opel is the great-grandson of Adam Opels and the first child from the second marriage of the racing driver Fritz von Opel to Emita Herrán Olozaga. He began his career under the pseudonym Antonio Bronco, because he wanted to convince as a racing driver and not as a descendant of an automobile dynasty; he also wanted to show consideration for his family.

In 1972 Opel won the British Formula 3 Championship . He drove his first Formula 1 race in 1973 for Ensign at the French Grand Prix . After only moderate success in five other starts, he moved in the 1974 season to the Brabham team, for which he competed in four races. He completed his last Grand Prix in 1974 in the Netherlands .

Von Opel was only able to reach the finish line in four of his ten races. His best finishes were two ninth places for Brabham. He did not reach a World Cup point.

In the 1990s, von Opel, who was in a relationship with the actress Marisa Berenson in the 1970s , withdrew from the public and has lived in a monastery in Thailand ever since .
