Opel is the name of a German family of entrepreneurs.

history

origin

The family originating from the Landgraviate of Hesse-Rheinfels begins the documented family line with the farmer Peter uf dem Scheyd in Dachsenhausen near Braubach , † between 1571 and 1580, whose son Michel Scheidt , farmer in Dachsenhausen, has had the family name Oppel (Opfel) since around 1595 led.

development

The branch of the entrepreneurial family, later known through the Opel brand , goes back to the locksmith Adam Opel (1837–1895) from Rüsselsheim and the innkeeper daughter Sophie Scheller (1840–1913) from Dornholzhausen . The company he founded, Opel, has produced sewing machines and bicycles, and later motor vehicles, among other things. In 1962, Irmgard von Opel and her two sons founded Chio Chips , today an Intersnack brand, on their Petersau estate .

Some of Adam Opel's descendants were raised to the hereditary grand-ducal Hessian nobility in Darmstadt . The first nobility award took place on March 13, 1917 for the brothers Dr.-Ing. E. h. Wilhelm Opel (1871–1948) , factory owner and Privy Councilor of Commerce in Hesse , and Heinrich Opel (1873–1928) , factory owner in Rüsselsheim . Another nobility award took place on January 17, 1918 for another son of Adam Opels, Carl Opel (1869–1927) , engineer, factory owner and Hessian commercial councilor.

Some members of the family also achieved sporting success in the fields of automobile sports, bicycle racing, rowing and tournament riding.

The family's burial place is the Opel mausoleum , built in 1924 in the old Seilfurt cemetery in Rüsselsheim am Main , not far from the Opel factory.

coat of arms

The coat of arms, awarded in 1917 and 1918, shows a black bar in a gold shield, covered with three silver wheels, each with five spokes. On the helmet with black and gold covers a growing, gold-reinforced black griffin , one of the wheels in its claws .
