Ludwig Opel (born January 1, 1880 in Rüsselsheim ; † April 16, 1916 ) was a German lawyer from the Opel family and co-owner of the Opel factory .

Life

Ludwig Opel was the descendant of a farming family originally from the Landgraviate of Hessen-Rheinfels and the fifth son of Adam and Sophie Opel . Ludwig Opel's father, Adam Opel , founded the family business in Rüsselsheim in 1862 as a manufacturer of sewing machines; later he expanded the group to a bicycle manufacturer. After his father's death in 1895, his five sons took over the company. In 1898 the Opel family, under the leadership of Wilhelm and his brother Fritz , brought the company into the automotive industry. They bought the company of the Dessau automotive pioneer and designer Friedrich Lutzmann , made him director and built the Opel patented motor car System Lutzmann .

Ludwig Opel was an enthusiastic cyclist , in 1898 he finished second in the world championship in the sprint of amateurs and thus contributed to the international reputation of Opel bicycles at the time.

After graduating from high school, Ludwig Opel studied law at the Hessian Ludwig University of Gießen and the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . He belonged to the Corps Starkenburgia and the Corps Rhenania Freiburg . After the assessor exam and the doctorate to Dr. iur. He initially managed the Berlin branch of the Opel works before he joined the management of the Opel works in Rüsselsheim as a co-owner.

Ludwig Opel died at the age of 36 in the First World War as a first lieutenant in the reserve of the Grand Ducal Hessian Leib-Dragoon Regiment No. 24 on the Eastern Front .
