Opel mausoleum

The Opel mausoleum in the old Seilfurt cemetery in Rüsselsheim am Main serves as the burial place of the German entrepreneur family Opel . The building, which is closed with a wrought iron gate, is not open to the public, except for special tours.

description

The Opel mausoleum , built in a classicistic style, was built in 1924 on the old Seilfurt cemetery on Mainzer Strasse, which is surrounded to the west and south by the Opel factory and to the north by the Main .

The interior of the mausoleum was designed by the Frankfurt artist Otto Linnemann . Gilded inscriptions on the walls, clad with red marble slabs, commemorate the 30 or so people who are currently buried in the crypt below. At the front of the room there is a bronze bust of the company's founder Adam Opel on a base, accompanied by two marble sculptures of women.

From the center of the interior, an opening covered with heavy stone slabs - which are only lifted for burials - leads into the crypt of the mausoleum. In addition to Adam and Sophie Opel (moved here after completion of the mausoleum), their five sons and their wives, as well as their nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren were buried there. A wall separates the underground grave room with the coffins from that with the urns. In 2001, when Elinor von Opels was buried, the last free coffin chamber was occupied. The last urn so far was brought to the Opel mausoleum in 2014.
