The 1974 Monaco Grand Prix took place on May 26th and was the sixth race of the 1974 World Automobile Championship .

Reports

background

The entry list for the Monaco GP was slightly smaller than that for the Belgian Grand Prix two weeks earlier, as small private teams in particular saw no realistic chance of qualifying for a place in the starting field, which was limited to 25 pilots. In addition, the organizers rejected the reports from some small racing teams such as Scuderia Finotto (for Gérard Larrousse ) and Maki ( Howden Ganley ) in advance. With 28 vehicles registered, three drivers had to expect to fail at the qualification hurdle.

training

The front row of the grid was formed by the two Ferrari 312B3s owned by Niki Lauda and Clay Regazzoni .

When Team Lotus had after repeated failures with the new Type 76 decided to return to the Type 72 to compete, its basic design from the year 1970 came. Nevertheless, Ronnie Peterson qualified for third place on the grid. The second works driver Jacky Ickx , however, only achieved 19th place with the actually outdated car.

Behind Peterson, the two Tyrrell pilots Patrick Depailler and Jody Scheckter qualified ahead of Jean-Pierre Jarier on Shadow .

The world championship leader Emerson Fittipaldi only achieved a disappointing 13th place.

Guy Edwards , Henri Pescarolo and Rikky von Opel initially failed to qualify. However, since the actually qualified Jochen Mass and Chris Amon could not take part in the race due to technical problems, Pescarolo and Edwards moved up.

run

Depailler had to complain about engine failure during the warm-up laps and finally had to start in the replacement car from the end of the field.

The race began with a dominant performance by the two Ferraris, who could easily stay at the front of the field. First Regazzoni led before Lauda. Jarier followed them in third place.

In midfield there was a collision between Denis Hulme and Jean-Pierre Beltoise , in which Arturo Merzario , Carlos Pace and Brian Redman were also directly involved. Thus the field was already decimated significantly in the first lap. Vittorio Brambilla , Tim Schenken and Vern Schuppan , who were each indirectly involved, were also eliminated within a few minutes due to consequential damage.

Behind Regazzoni and Lauda, Peterson put in a strong performance by overtaking Jarier on lap two and catching up on the two Ferraris. In the third lap, Hans-Joachim Stuck crashed into the rear of James Hunts Hesketh in the casino area . The Briton was able to continue the race, but Stuck hit the guardrails with his March and injured himself. A little later, François Migault had to endure a moment of shock when, due to a brake defect in the area of the port chicane, his BRM crashed headlong into a security fence erected there.

On the sixth lap, Peterson made a mistake in the Rascasse and was rammed by Carlos Reutemann , who was unable to evade in time. Reutemann was eliminated. Peterson, however, was able to continue his journey in sixth place behind the two leading Ferraris as well as Jean-Pierre Jarier, Jody Scheckter and Mike Hailwood . Hailwood's failure on lap 12 gave him back fifth place.

After half of the participants had already dropped out after only twelve rounds, the situation calmed down for a few rounds. Then Peterson overtook Scheckter and Jarier one after the other and, thanks to a spin by Regazzoni, who had been in the lead up to that point, came in second behind Lauda, who was now in the lead. Its electrics failed on lap 33, so Peterson was able to take the lead. Scheckter followed in second place, who had passed Jarier shortly before. Then the order of the pilots placed within the points remained constant until the end of the race.

John Watson received his first World Championship point in sixth place.
