The 1969 Monaco Grand Prix took place on May 18 and was the third race of the 1969 World Cup .
Reports
background
The field of participants largely corresponded to that of the previous Grand Prix in Spain with the exception that Jochen Rindt had not yet recovered from his nose injury there and was therefore represented by Richard Attwood .
In addition, the private team Antique Automobiles competed for the first time this season and, with driver Vic Elford , contested the last Grand Prix participation of a Cooper racing car. For Silvio Moser , who used a private Brabham, it was also the first GP participation of the year.
training
After the first training session, a ban on any wing was imposed in response to accidents and problems at the previous Spanish GP . The times from this first training session, which was completed with wings, were canceled and did not count towards qualification. Contrary to the fears of some teams that the cars, which were tuned with the aerodynamic aids, would hardly be drivable without wings, only slight losses of time were recorded.
Jackie Stewart achieved the first pole position of his career ahead of Chris Amon in a Ferrari and his Matra teammate Jean-Pierre Beltoise .
run
Stewart went into the first corner as the leader, closely followed by Amon. Behind Beltoise came under pressure from Graham Hill , who passed him on the third lap. Within the first ten laps, Stewart had a ten-second lead.
Meanwhile, John Surtees was struggling with a gearbox failure in the poorly lit tunnel. Jack Brabham overlooked this and collided with him. Both failed, but were unharmed. Amon and Beltoise, who were both in promising positions, retired in the first quarter of the race with technical problems. Shortly after Beltoise, the leading Stewart also had to retire, so that both Matra-Fords were eliminated within two laps with exactly the same defect.
Hill was now in the lead, twelve seconds ahead of Jacky Ickx and Piers Courage . Since Ickx had to give up on lap 49 due to a damage to the suspension, Courage finished the race in second place and thus ensured an unexpected success for the private team Frank Williams Racing Cars , which only contested its second Grand Prix outing. Joseph Siffert reached the destination in third place with his customer Lotus.
