The 1965 Monaco Grand Prix took place on May 30, 1965 on the Circuit de Monaco near Monte Carlo and was the second race of the 1965 World Automobile Championship .

There were five months between the South African Grand Prix and the Monaco Grand Prix, which the teams used to improve their cars. During this long break, some non-World Championship races took place. Paul Hawkins won the Cape South Easter Trophy on Brabham and Jackie Stewart the BRDC International Trophy . The victories at the Gran Premio di Siracusa , the Race of Champions and the Sunday Mirror Trophy went to Lotus drivers Jim Clark and Mike Spence .
The 1965 Indianapolis 500 took place just one day after the Monaco Grand Prix, which left riders unable to attend either event. Clark decided on the Indianapolis 500 and against taking part in the Monaco Grand Prix. Lotus then wanted to replace him with Pedro Rodríguez , but the organizers only guaranteed Lotus a fixed starting place for the race, so a driver would have had to qualify first. In protest against this decision, Lotus withdrew the registration of both vehicles and paused for a Grand Prix. In Brabham was missing Dan Gurney , he also participated in the Indianapolis 500th He was replaced by the eventual world champion Denis Hulme , who made his debut race in the automobile world championship and was the new regular driver at Brabham. After a break for several races, Honda returned and reported two vehicles for the first time. Ronnie Bucknum drove for the team as early as 1964, Richie Ginther switched from BRM to Honda. The Honda RA272 debuted as a new car , a further development of the Honda RA271 with only minor modifications. As the second team after Brabham, Honda changed tire manufacturers and used Goodyear tires instead of Dunlop tires .
In the teams with customer vehicles, Hawkins moved from John Willment Automobiles to DW Racing Enterprises and was registered alongside Bob Anderson . Anderson drove a Brabham BT11 , Hawkins a Lotus 33 . Frank Gardner continued to drive for John Willment Automobiles . Reg Parnell Racing competed with Richard Attwood and Mike Hailwood . Attwood made his debut race after he had previously been registered for the British Grand Prix in 1964 , but did not start there. For Hailwood it was the only race of the season, he devoted himself to motorcycling again in the following years and did not return to the automobile world championship until 1971 .
With Jack Brabham , Bruce McLaren and Graham Hill three former winners took part in the race, Hill won the Grand Prix the two years before. Cooper was three times victorious among the designers , Lotus, Scuderia Ferrari and BRM twice each. training
The first training session took place on Thursday afternoon and lasted 90 minutes. It started to rain right at the beginning and the weather conditions didn't get better until the end of the training session. Only a few drivers drove fast laps at the beginning; they used the rest of the time to set up the car. The second training session, which was one hour long, was held on Friday morning. With a cloudless sky and a dry racetrack, faster lap times were possible than the day before. Brabham set a first best time that was already better than his pole time from last year. Hill undercut this time before Stewart improved to first place at the end of training. He was ahead of Hill, Brabham and Bandini.
The third training session took place on Saturday afternoon. As on the previous day, the drivers had an hour to improve on the grid. Joakim Bonnier lost oil right from the start and distributed it on the track, so that new best times were only possible when it was eliminated. Hill beat his teammate Stewart's fastest time and Brabham was faster too. Hill stayed in first place until the end of training, achieving his first pole position of the season. Behind them Brabham qualified ahead of Stewart and Bandini, so that four different constructors were in the first four places. Surtees finished fifth and Attwood sixth. This made him the best driver with a customer vehicle. The first ten were completed by McLaren, Hulme, Anderson and Joseph Siffert , the two Honda were last on the grid because they again had technical problems with the Honda engine.
As in previous years, the field of drivers was limited to 16 vehicles. Depending on the placements in the 1964 drivers' championship, some teams and drivers were already seeded, others had to qualify. For this reason, Jochen Rindt was the only driver who did not qualify for the race, even though he was faster than Ginther. The 1965 Monaco Grand Prix was the only race in the automobile world championship for Rindt for which he did not qualify.

When rolling forward to the starting grid, Bucknum stopped because the Honda engine did not start. He only started racing a few seconds after the start. His teammate Ginther was eliminated after the first lap with a broken half-wave. Hill took the lead in front of Stewart, behind which the two Ferraris positioned themselves in front of Brabham. In the first laps, the two BRMs dominated the race and built up a lead over the competition. With a few seconds gap, Bandini followed in third place ahead of Surtees. Brabham dueled McLaren and Attwood in midfield. Hill and Stewart drove a second faster than the pursuers per lap. Stewart stayed close to his teammate until the twelfth lap of the race, until he was stopped while lapping Bucknum and lost contact with Hill.
On lap ten, Hailwood retired with a gearbox failure. Brabham and Anderson also had technical problems but were able to continue the race for the time being. Brabham only retired later with engine failure, Anderson slowly pitted to have the suspension repaired. He blocked the lead Hill, who had to take an evasive maneuver into one of the emergency exits after the tunnel. Hill got out of the car and pushed him back onto the track with his own hands to continue the Grand Prix in fifth. For the first time in the context of the automobile world championship, Stewart then led a Grand Prix. In his career, another 78 listed races followed, with which he set a new record in 1973 . Bandini improved to second place, followed by Brabham Surtees and came in third.
On lap 30, Stewart spun off the track due to a driving mistake, causing Bandini to overtake him and take the lead. Surtees fell back to fourth and was then ahead of his teammate Hill. Brabham passed Bandini on lap 34, so the lead changed again. Stewart let Hill overtake, and Hill immediately got a lead on Stewart. Brabham was just ahead of the two Ferraris from Bandini and Surtees. Since Brabham's display of the engine speed failed, he switched by ear, which was difficult in a duel. He over-revved the engine and had to give up the race on lap 42 after an engine failure. Gardner had previously retired with a broken engine suspension and Bucknum's second Honda did not reach the finish line after a gearbox failure either. One lap after Brabham retired, Attwood had an accident after breaking the suspension. It narrowly missed the McLaren car and hit the bales of hay that served as a barrier. Attwood was unharmed. However, when the tip arrived at the scene of the accident, the route was temporarily blocked. All drivers drove slowly past Attwood's car in the same order as before the accident.
After half of the race, Bandini was again in first place, closely followed by Surtees and Hill. Behind them were Stewart, McLaren and Hulme at a greater distance. After several attacks, Hill overtook Surtees on lap 53 and Bandini on lap 64 to take the lead again. Hill then built a lead over the competition and broke the lap record several times. On lap 78, Bandini was overtaken by Surtees, who reduced his speed to save fuel. Two laps later, Hawkins had an accident in the port area of the line. He brushed the line and was then thrown over the bales of straw. His car landed in the dock and sank to the bottom, Hawkins freed himself from the vehicle and was brought ashore unharmed by a lifeboat. Hawkins was the second driver after Alberto Ascari to have an accident in this way, and remained the last, as the distance to the harbor basin was expanded and improved in the following years.
The gap at the front remained constant until the last lap when Surtees stopped because he had run out of gas. Bandini finished second, while Stewart took third place, his first podium finish in the automobile world championship. 42 more followed in his career, with whom he set a new record in 1973. Graham Hill won the race. For him it was the first win of the season and the third in a row at the Monaco Grand Prix. He drew level with Stirling Moss , who was the only driver to have won this race three times before. It was not until 1986 that Alain Prost was again a driver who was victorious at the Monaco Grand Prix three times in a row. Despite the failure, Surtees was ranked fourth, ahead of McLaren and Siffert, who took the other points. The first ten were completed by Bonnier, Hulme, Anderson and Hawkins. Hawkins was still rated because he had covered the necessary race distance.
In the drivers' championship, Hill took the lead from Clark and Surtees, four points ahead of both drivers. After the race, BRM was in first place in the constructors' championship with one point ahead of Ferrari and four points ahead of Lotus.
