The 1976 Monaco Grand Prix took place on May 30th and was the sixth race of the 1976 World Automobile Championship .

Reports

background

The new RAM Racing team decided not to take part in the Monaco Grand Prix because the organizers decided to limit the race to 25 training participants and 20 starters for safety reasons . In addition, Mario Andretti , who was taking part in the Indianapolis 500 , which was taking place at the same time, was missing , so that the Lotus team entered with just one vehicle. The second factory Surtees , which Brett Lunger had driven in the previous races , had been sold to the private team Norev Racing . Henri Pescarolo returned to Formula 1 at the wheel of this car after a break of more than a year. Since there was no suitable replacement vehicle available for Lunger, he paused this weekend.

training

Once again, the training times resulted in a front row consisting of the two Ferrari 312T2s driven by Niki Lauda and Clay Regazzoni . The two rows behind each consisted of a factory march and one of the six-wheeled Tyrrell P34s .

Emerson Fittipaldi and Chris Amon achieved good training results in seventh and twelfth places respectively in their inferior vehicles, while McLaren driver James Hunt in 14th and Brabham regular driver Carlos Reutemann in 20th and last fell well short of expectations.

Jacky Ickx , who was aiming for his 100th Grand Prix participation, failed to qualify for the second time in a row.

run

While Lauda immediately took the lead, Ronnie Peterson took second place ahead of Regazzoni. The first 18 drivers passed the Sainte-Dévote curve after the start without any problems. However, the last two Alan Jones and Carlos Reutemann collided in the 90-degree curve, which was much tighter than in previous years after a conversion. Reutemann then left immediately. Jones gave up after the first lap at the pits because of the damage to his car.

One of the few changes at the front of the field came when Jody Scheckter overtook his team-mate Patrick Depailler on lap 15 and took fourth place.

James Hunt, who had meanwhile dropped to last place due to a spin in the Tabac corner, retired on lap 25 with engine failure. Regazzoni slipped on the oil that Hunt's McLaren M23 had lost and had to steer his car into an emergency drain. As a result, he lost two places to the two Tyrrell pilots Scheckter and Depailler. On the oil track, Peterson also had an accident one lap later and was unable to continue the race.

Lauda completed the last laps of the race with a large lead over the two Tyrrell. Depailler fell behind Regazzoni on lap 64, but he was eliminated on lap 74 due to a driving error, so that Depailler got back the podium. Hans-Joachim Stuck , Jochen Mass and Emerson Fittipaldi also finished the race in the points.
