Reports
background
Formula 1 started the European season with several rule changes. These included, among other things, size restrictions for the airbox and the rear wing of the racing cars. The airboxes, some of which were extremely towering recently, were a thing of the past. In response to these changes, Scuderia Ferrari presented the 312T2 , a further development of the 312T in which the combustion air was drawn in through inlets located on the sides of the cockpit. The positive effect of the airbox was retained and only adapted to the applicable rules. Ensign also presented a new car. The most sensational new development, however, was the Tyrrell P34 , which was the first Formula 1 racing car to have six wheels, with the four front wheels being steerable. Patrick Depailler made the debut of the car, while his team colleague Jody Scheckter started with the conventional 007 .
Since the Vel's Parnelli Jones Racing team had ended their Formula 1 involvement after the Grand Prix in Long Beach , Mario Andretti was looking for a new contract. The Lotus team then signed him instead of Brian Henton as the second regular driver alongside Gunnar Nilsson .
The new team RAM Racing appeared for the first time and reported two customer Brabham for the two debutants Loris Kessel and Emilio Zapico . With Emilio de Villota at the wheel of a private Williams FW04, another local Formula 1 rookie added to the entry list. The former main sponsor of Ensign, the Dutch company HB Bewaking Alarm Systems , used an Ensign N175 vehicle from the previous year under the name Boro 001 and hired Larry Perkins as a driver.
The Frank Williams Racing Cars team officially competed under the name of its increasingly influential main sponsor Walter Wolf Racing .
training
The entry list consisted of 30 participants, of which only the 24 fastest in training were admitted to the race.
James Hunt secured pole position alongside Niki Lauda and in front of Patrick Depailler , who formed the second row of the grid in the six-wheeled Tyrrell together with McLaren driver Jochen Mass . This was followed by Clay Regazzoni in the second Ferrari next Vittorio Brambilla on March in row three and Gunnar Nilsson and Jacques Laffite in the fourth row.
run
Lauda managed to accelerate Hunt before the first corner. Brambilla also started very well and took third place in front of Depailler and Mass, but could not defend it permanently. By the twelfth lap he fell back to sixth place, behind Laffite.
In the 32nd round, Hunt took the lead from Lauda. Two laps later, Mass also passed the Austrian and formed a McLaren one-two lead with his team-mate. This lasted until the 66th lap when Mass was canceled due to an engine failure. As a result, Nilsson, who had already moved a few positions ahead, came in third. Carlos Reutemann and Carlos Pace secured the Brabham team's first points of the season with fourth and sixth place. Chris Amon finished the race in fifth place after a sovereign performance in the new Ensign.
In the parc fermé , the width of the McLaren M23 was judged as not conforming to the rules by James Hunt. The victory was then revoked. McLaren appealed the disqualification. Two months later the protest was accepted and the original race result was restored.
