The 1987 Spanish Grand Prix took place in Jerez de la Frontera on September 27th and was the 13th race of the 1987 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

The field of participants was expanded to 28 pilots by the renewed appearance of the Coloni team.

training

Nelson Piquet qualified for pole position with the Williams FW11B , which had active suspension . His team mate Nigel Mansell , who did without this additional equipment, took second place in front of the two Ferraris owned by Gerhard Berger and Michele Alboreto . Ayrton Senna and Teo Fabi formed the third row ahead of Alain Prost and Thierry Boutsen .

run

Piquet initially converted his pole position into a lead, but was overtaken by his team-mate Mansell before the end of the first lap, who from then on quickly gained a lead. Senna followed in third place in front of the two Ferrari drivers.

Even during his pit stop, Mansell kept his top position, whereas Piquet fell behind Senna and Prost due to a comparatively bad stop. Shortly afterwards he spun against Prost in an attempted overtaking maneuver, which also caused Alboreto and Boutsen to pass him.

As already several times during the season, Senna decided to complete the race without changing tires. This tactic turned out to be wrong in the closing stages, as the Brazilian slowed down significantly and lost several positions due to badly worn tires.

Nigel Mansell won ahead of Alain Prost and his teammate Stefan Johansson , for whom the strategy of not making a pit stop worked. Nelson Piquet came fourth ahead of Ayrton Senna and Philippe Alliot .
