The 1991 Spanish Grand Prix took place on September 29th in Montmeló north of Barcelona and was the 14th race of the 1991 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

On the weekend after the Portuguese Grand Prix , the Spanish GP took place for the first time on the Circuit de Catalunya , which had opened a few days earlier . The decision to change location was due, among other things, to Martin Donnelly's serious accident at the Circuito Permanente de Jerez last year .

Max Mosley replaced Jean-Marie Balestre as President of the FIA and FISA in the week between the two races .

Since Johnny Herbert was absent again due to other commitments, Michael Bartels took over his car for the fourth time this season. The pilots Gabriele Tarquini and Olivier Grouillard swapped places between the Fondmetal and AGS teams .

After failing 13 times in the pre-qualification, Pedro Chaves decided to end his Formula 1 career without having taken part in a regular qualifying, let alone a Grand Prix. Since no replacement driver was found at short notice, the Coloni team did not take part in the race weekend. In favor of the debutant Alessandro Zanardi , Roberto Moreno had to vacate his cockpit for the second time within a short time after he had moved from Benetton to Jordan due to Michael Schumacher's commitment .

training

Gerhard Berger qualified for the pole position ahead of Nigel Mansell , who was only slightly hindered by an injury he sustained while playing soccer. Ayrton Senna and Riccardo Patrese formed the second row in front of Michael Schumacher, Alain Prost , Jean Alesi and Ivan Capelli .

run

Shortly before the start, after a rain shower, the track was still damp, but quickly drying out. Prost's request for a start on slicks was not granted by Scuderia Ferrari .

While Berger converted his pole position into a lead, Mansell was unable to defend himself against Senna and Schumacher due to a bad start. Further down the field, Ivan Capelli collided with Emanuele Pirro . While he was able to continue the race after a pit stop, Capelli had to retire. Éric Bernard and Thierry Boutsen also retired after a few meters due to a collision.

In the second lap, Mansell took third place from Schumacher and caught up with Senna. In the area of the start-finish straight, both were on the same level, only a few centimeters apart on the sides. At the end of the straight, Senna gave in, leaving Mansell second.

When the track was almost dry, almost all the pilots went to their boxes to have slicks installed. The leadership changed several times. Berger's stop lasted significantly longer than that of his team-mate Senna, which put him in the lead when all opponents had made their tire changes. In the twelfth lap, Berger pushed Senna out of the lead and Mansell once again caught up with the leader of the world championship standings. When it started to rain again, Senna spun and lost two places to Mansell and Schumacher, who had previously overtaken Prost. After drying again, Mansell overtook the leading Berger. Schumacher's attempt to also overtake Berger ended with a spin that threw him back to sixth place. At this point Prost was in third place ahead of Senna and Alesi, who, however, had to reckon with a 10-second penalty due to an early start.

In the 33rd lap, Berger retired again this season, lying in a promising position due to a technical defect. Mansell won ahead of Prost and Patrese, who, like Alesi, had overtaken Senna. Schumacher received the last World Cup point of the day in sixth place.
