background
During the seven-week break after the South African Grand Prix , two non-World Championship Formula 1 races took place in Great Britain: Peter Gethin finished victorious in the Race of Champions at Brands Hatch , Jackie Stewart won the International Trophy at Silverstone .
New safety rules were adopted on April 1st. Among other things, the racing cars had to have deformable structures, so-called crumple zones . Since some teams were not able to finish the corresponding renovation work in time, a smaller field of participants than expected entered the Spanish Grand Prix, which took place again at Montjuïc in accordance with the annual change .
Ferrari only reported one car for Jacky Ickx . It was the new development 312B3 . Andrea de Adamich changed teams and instead of a Surtees drove a third works Brabham under the name of his own main sponsor. Graham Hill made his first appearance this season behind the wheel of a privately used Shadow .
Since March regular driver Jean-Pierre Jarier was taking part in a Formula 2 race taking place at the same time on the Nürburgring , he was represented by Henri Pescarolo . The new Type 731 was used for the first time .
After his recovery, Nanni Galli returned to Frank Williams' team, where a new chassis called "IR" was used as an abbreviation for Iso Rivolta from this weekend .
training
The fastest training lap was driven by Ronnie Peterson , who was the only driver this weekend under 1:22 min. stayed. Next to him, Denis Hulme qualified for the front row in front of the two Tyrrell of Jackie Stewart and François Cevert .
run
Peterson put his starting place in a lead ahead of Hulme and Stewart. Mike Hailwood had to start out of the pit lane after the morning warm-up because of an engine change and follow the field, while Niki Lauda had moved up from eleventh place to sixth after a good start.
In the third lap, Hulme was ousted by Stewart to third, while Emerson Fittipaldi , who had started from the fourth row, worked his way past Lauda and Jean-Pierre Beltoise to fifth.
This order remained essentially constant until the 20th lap. Then Hulme had to pit because of an imbalance in one of the bikes and released third place. Fittipaldi passed Cevert and when Stewart had to retire on lap 47, the two Lotus factory drivers had a one-two lead. This lasted until the 57th lap when the leading Peterson had to retire due to transmission problems. Since Carlos Reutemann, who was second from this point on, also dropped out a little later, Fittipaldi, Cevert and George Follmer finally reached the podium. For Follmer, this was his greatest success in Formula 1, although he only contested his second Grand Prix.
