Reports
background
The venue for the Austrian Grand Prix was already for the fourth time the high-speed track near Zeltweg , which was still used without chicanes.
After Ferrari had not participated in two world championship races, the team was now back with a car that was driven by Arturo Merzario .
Due to his injury at the German Grand Prix , Niki Lauda had to take a break from his home Grand Prix. He was not represented at BRM , so that the team only took part in the race weekend with two instead of three factory cars for the only time this season.
The teams Ensign and Tecno each appeared with further developed vehicles. Also had Harvey Postlethwaite some modifications to the customer March of Hesketh Racing made.
The March works team brought back Roger Williamson's predecessor, Jean-Pierre Jarier, as a regular driver three weeks after the death of Roger Williamson . The main sponsor STP stopped providing financial support.
training
Emerson Fittipaldi had fully recovered from his injuries sustained in training for the Dutch Grand Prix and took pole position ahead of teammate Ronnie Peterson . Behind the two Lotus , the two McLaren drivers Denis Hulme and Peter Revson qualified . Carlos Reutemann and Arturo Merzario shared the third row.
run
Peterson took the lead from second on the grid. Pole setter Fittipaldi was third behind Hulme. Revson couldn't leave his starting position due to a damaged clutch. Mike Beuttler couldn't evade in time, collided with him and retired. In the course of this collision, his march lost some oil that got onto the asphalt.
On the fourth lap, Jackie Stewart , who had started from seventh place, overtook Merzario's Ferrari and thus came fourth. Shortly afterwards, his team-mate François Cevert also tried to get past the Italian. However, a collision occurred as a result of which a damaged suspension forced Cevert to give up. Reutemann, however, managed a little later to overtake Merzario. Since Hulme had to make a pit stop, the Argentine finished fourth. The now runner-up Fittipaldi was let past by his team-mate Peterson shortly afterwards in order to be able to maintain his chances of the world title.
Fittipaldi stayed in the lead until lap 49, before being forced to retire due to damage to the fuel supply. This put Stewart in second place, while Carlos Pace achieved third place after a successful overtaking maneuver against Reutemann.
With three races to go, Fittipaldi was now 24 points behind Stewart.
Carlos Pace set the fastest race lap for the second time in a row and achieved the first podium finish of his Formula 1 career.
