Reports
background
After the first edition of the Brazilian Grand Prix had not counted towards the World Championship last year, the race took place with World Championship status for the first time in 1973. Last but not least, the fact that the local Emerson Fittipaldi was the reigning world champion sparked great interest from the audience.
All teams traveled directly from Buenos Aires , where the Argentine Grand Prix had taken place two weeks earlier, with the same line-up. Only the local guest starter Luiz Bueno completed the field by renting a used Surtees TS9B for the race. It was his first and only participation in a Formula 1 race with world championship status.
training
Lotus had conducted extensive tests on the track the week before the Grand Prix to increase Emerson Fittipaldi's chances of winning in front of the home crowd. The experience gained in the process paid off in official training, in which both regular drivers qualified for the front row, with the pole position going to Ronnie Peterson two tenths of a second ahead . It was the first Pole in his career. Apart from the two Lotus drivers, no other driver achieved a fastest lap time of less than 2:32 minutes.
The first row, consisting of three vehicles, was completed by Ferrari driver Jacky Ickx . Behind them Clay Regazzoni and Denis Hulme qualified for the second row. The third row consisted of Carlos Pace , Carlos Reutemann and Jackie Stewart .
run
With very high temperatures on race day, the spectators experienced a perfect start by two local drivers. Emerson Fittipaldi took the lead and Carlos Pace shot up from sixth on the grid to second. It was followed by Jackie Stewart, Ronnie Peterson and Jacky Ickx.
Pace could not hold his very good position for long. In the second lap he was overtaken by Stewart, and a little later by Peterson. The Swede then dueled Stewart for second place up to the sixth lap, before he went off the track and had an accident due to damage to the wheel attachment.
Meanwhile, Ickx was past Pace and finished third. The positions at the top then remained constant over several laps, while Denis Hulme created tension by constantly catching up on the leaders. After Pace had to give up on the tenth lap due to a suspension damage, Hulme overtook fourth-placed Jean-Pierre Beltoise on lap 12 and quickly caught up with Ickx, whom he was also able to overtake three laps later.
As Ickx had to make a pit stop towards the end of the race due to a flat tire , Beltoise was eliminated due to an electrical fault and Clay Regazzoni also had to have new tires fitted in the pits, fourth place ultimately went to Arturo Merzario , who started the race from 17th on the grid was.
Emerson Fittipaldi won his home Grand Prix in his hometown for the first time and thus celebrated the second victory in the second round of the season. He had also achieved the fastest race lap, albeit at the same time as Denis Hulme.
