The 1987 Brazilian Grand Prix took place in Rio de Janeiro on April 12 and was the first race of the 1987 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
Since Keke Rosberg ended his Formula 1 career at the end of the 1986 season, a place at the side of the reigning world champion Alain Prost at McLaren became free. This was filled with Stefan Johansson , who had been dismissed from Scuderia Ferrari in favor of Gerhard Berger . Thierry Boutsen took his former place at Benetton . The team also took over the engine contract with Ford-Cosworth after the Haas-Lola team left . The Japanese engine manufacturer Honda , which had previously only equipped one team with Williams , from then on also supplied the Lotus team and enabled the Japanese Satoru Nakajima to make his Formula 1 debut alongside Ayrton Senna . In addition to Nakajima, Pascal Fabre at AGS and Adrián Campos at Minardi made two other debutants this weekend.
Jonathan Palmer moved from Zakspeed to Tyrrell . In return, Martin Brundle occupied the former cockpit of his compatriot. Christian Danner was signed as the second regular driver of what is still the only German team. With March , a big name returned to Formula 1. However, the team officially started under the name of the main sponsor Leyton House . A modified Formula 3000 racing car piloted by Ivan Capelli was used.
Renault no longer supplied engines. Even BMW significantly reduced its Formula 1 involvement. At Arrows , further developed BMW engines from the previous year were used under the name Megatron . Only Brabham continued to receive factory support from the Bavarian company. Alfa Romeo engines were originally intended to be used at Ligier . However, due to contractual problems with the new owner Fiat SpA , this did not materialize. The French team had to forego the first race because the racing cars had to be converted to fit Megatron engines.
Since the performance of the turbo engines was further reduced for safety and cost reasons, some teams were already using conventional naturally aspirated engines from Ford-Cosworth. These were allowed to have a displacement of 3500 cubic centimeters. Cosworth was the only naturally aspirated engine supplier that year. The Cosworth DFZ was a further development of the DFV from 1967.
After Pirelli withdrew , Goodyear was the sole tire supplier to Formula 1 for two years.
training
The two Williams drivers Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet qualified for the first row ahead of Ayrton Senna, Teo Fabi , Alain Prost and Thierry Boutsen , with lap times that were almost two seconds shorter than their fastest competitors .
run
After several engine failures during training and during the warm-up , the March team had no more replacement units available, so that only 22 vehicles started the race.
While Piquet took the lead, Mansell fell back to fifth behind Senna, Fabi and Boutsen. By the third lap, however, he came back up to third place. Adrián Campos was disqualified after driving three laps because he started the introductory lap late and afterwards did not go to the end of the field, but returned to his original starting position.
In the seventh lap, Piquet had to head for the pit because paper had got caught in the cooling inlets of his car. Senna took the lead. Piquet returned to the track in twelfth place. Shortly afterwards, the cooling vents of Mansell's second Williams FW11B also had to be cleaned in the pits.
With a pit stop by Senna, Prost took over the top position for four laps until Piquet had fought his way through the field again. When he made his second stop on lap 21, Alain Prost again took the lead and from then on defended it to the finish. Nelson Piquet finished second in front of Prost's new team-mate Stefan Johansson and Gerhard Berger, Thierry Boutsen and Nigel Mansell, who had been thrown back to ninth place after a puncture.
