background
After the Japanese Grand Prix , Jenson Button led the drivers' standings with 14 points ahead of Rubens Barrichello and 16 points ahead of Sebastian Vettel . Brawn- Mercedes led the constructors' championship with 35.5 points ahead of Red Bull- Renault and with 89 points ahead of Ferrari .
Timo Glock , who had an accident at the Japanese Grand Prix , was replaced by Kamui Kobayashi at Toyota . This made his Formula 1 debut at the Brazilian Grand Prix.
With Giancarlo Fisichella and Kimi Räikkönen (once each) two former winners competed for this Grand Prix.
training
In the first free practice, Mark Webber set the fastest lap ahead of Barrichello and his team-mate Vettel. Fernando Alonso took the lead in the second free practice session . Sébastien Buemi and local hero Barrichello followed in second and third place . The third free practice on Saturday started after 42 minutes for 18 minutes due to rain. A few minutes before the end it was canceled by Romain Grosjean after an accident . The fastest time on the wet track was achieved by Williams driver Nico Rosberg ahead of his team-mate Kazuki Nakajima . Button followed in third place.
Qualifying
Qualifying for the Brazilian Grand Prix initially took place under heavy rain. The first section had to be interrupted after just four minutes because Giancarlo Fisichella had turned in the Senna-S and had to park the car. After the track was opened again, Rosberg set the fastest lap. In addition to Fisichella, Heidfeld , Hamilton , Kovalainen and Vettel were eliminated. The second section, which had to be paused before the beginning, was also interrupted a few minutes after Vitantonio Liuzzi had flown off on the start and finish straight. After the rain stopped, qualifying continued after a good hour and Rosberg set the fastest lap on a drying track on intermediate tires. In addition to Liuzzi, Button, Grosjean, Alguersuari and Kobayashi were eliminated. In the third qualifying segment, Barrichello posted the fastest lap and secured pole position in his home race. Webber and Sutil followed in second and third place . Qualifying in Brazil lasted a total of 161 minutes due to several interruptions, making it the longest qualifying in Formula 1 history.
run
The Brazilian Grand Prix began with a turbulent start. Barrichello held the lead over Webber. Kimi Raikkonen , who lost his front wing during a blocking maneuver by Webber, worked his way up to third place . Then there was a duel between Sutil and Trulli . Trulli came briefly off the track and then collided with Sutil, who then lost control of his car and shot Alonso. After the pilots got out of their cars, Trulli ran to Sutil and complained to the German. During the race, Trulli demanded a penalty for Sutil, but since the race stewards saw the collision as a normal racing accident, Trulli was fined $ 10,000 for improper behavior.
At the end of the first lap, Hamilton, Kovalainen and Raikkonen had to pit. A mishap happened to Kovalainen during his stop, he tore off the tank hose from the tank system and continued with the hose. The gasoline in the hose splashed on the Raikkonen driving behind it and created a brief flame. Raikkonen was able to drive on without any problems and Kovalainen was freed from his tank hose by Brawn mechanics.
Due to the collision on the first lap, the safety car had to go out on the track. On the sixth lap the race was released again and Barrichello kept his lead again. There have been some shifts behind him. The third-placed Rosberg was overtaken by Robert Kubica . Further down, Button took eighth place from Grosjean, who was overtaken by Vettel and Hamilton a little later. A little later, Button made it clear with an overtaking maneuver against Nakajima in the Senna-S that he wanted to win the world championship title at this race. A lap later Button tried to overtake the second Japanese in the field, debutant Kobayashi, in the Senna-S , but the newcomer kept the position in front of Button and was able to keep him behind despite several attacks.
At the top, the lighter Barrichello was no more than a few seconds away from Webber. In the 21st lap, Barrichello finally had to pit and passed the lead to Webber. First Barrichello came back on the track before Vettel, but the German took advantage of his warmer tires and passed the Brazilian. Shortly afterwards, Heidfeld rolled out because he ran out of fuel. While Webber pulled away from the front with fast laps, Button tried to pass Kobayashi again and, after another maneuver failed, passed the Toyota driver. Shortly afterwards, Nakajima also passed Kobayashi, but Kobayashi countered and stayed in front of his compatriot.
Webber also had to make his pit stop on lap 26, but his lead was sufficient and he kept the lead over Barrichello. On the 28th lap, Rosberg gave up with a gearbox failure in the pits. A little later, his teammate Nakajima also dropped out. After Kobayashi came out of the pit lane, there was a duel between the two Japanese in which Nakajima lost his front wing and then crashed into a pile of tires. Nakajima was unharmed. After Button had won an overtaking maneuver against Buemi, Vettel also made his first pit stop and came back on the track behind Button. Meanwhile, Barrichello's chances of a home win declined as he was clearly behind Webber and Kubica was between the two.
From the leading trio, Webber came into the pits last and maintained his lead with ease. Vettel was able to pass Button on his second stop, but the Briton still had the best chance of winning the world championship. When there were only a few laps left, Barrichello was first overtaken by Hamilton and then had to make a pit stop with a puncture. The Brazilian was once again unlucky in his home race. On the 68th lap, Kobayashi showed his skills again by overtaking Fisichella in the Senna-S .
Finally, Webber was the first to be waved off by Felipe Massa , who was allowed to wave the checkered flag. Kubica was second ahead of Hamilton. Further points went to Vettel, Button, Raikkonen, Buemi and Barrichello. With fifth place in the race, Button won the 2009 drivers' championship.
