The 1979 Brazilian Grand Prix took place in São Paulo on February 4th and was the second race of the 1979 World Automobile Championship .

Reports

background

After a year break, in which the Brazilian GP had taken place on the Jacarepaguá racetrack , they returned to São Paulo. In the meantime some safety devices had been added or replaced. The asphalt, which was also renewed, had a similar number of bumps as in previous years, which was criticized by some drivers.

The same participants who had contested the opening race in Argentina two weeks earlier also traveled to the second round of the World Championship. Only a few changes were made in the area of vehicles. So had Patrick Tambay on the older McLaren M26 recourse because his real car of the current type M28 due to damages from the starting accident in Buenos Aires resulted was not ready. At Brabham , on the other hand, both factory drivers had the opportunity to drive the new BT48 for the first time .

training

The training was again dominated by the two Ligier pilots Jacques Laffite and Patrick Depailler . The two Lotus factory drivers Carlos Reutemann and Mario Andretti took second row on the grid, ahead of the two Ferraris of Gilles Villeneuve and Jody Scheckter .

run

Behind Laffite, who took the lead, Reutemann briefly passed Depailler. During the first lap, however, he had to give up the second position again and even fell back to fourth place behind Andretti. Emerson Fittipaldi was meanwhile in fifth place after an overtaking maneuver against Jody Scheckter. When Andretti's Lotus slowed due to a misfire, the Brazilian was able to gain another position on lap two.

While Fittipaldi put pressure on Reutemann, Didier Pironi passed Scheckter.

On the 22nd lap, Fittipaldi had to make a pit stop due to a loosened wheel. The two Ferraris also headed for their pits to have new tires fitted. At the end of the race they finished fifth and sixth behind Laffite, Depailler, Reutemann and Pironi.

It was the only double victory in Ligier's team history, which lasted from 1976 to 1996 .
