Fittipaldi Automotive was a Brazilian motorsport racing team that took part in a total of 103 Grand Prix for the Formula 1 World Championship between 1975 and 1982 . The team, which was initially based in Brazil and later operated from England , officially started until 1977 under the name of its main sponsor, the Brazilian sugar producer Copersucar . From 1978 onwards, the team entered the registration lists under the name of its founders, the two-time Formula 1 world champion Emerson Fittipaldi and his brother Wilson .
history
Copersucar or Fittipaldi was registered for 120 Grand Prix races between 1975 and 1982 and was able to qualify for the start in 103 races. Fittipaldi drivers achieved three podium positions, but the team was unable to win a race. Emerson Fittipaldi achieved the best result at the 1978 Brazilian Grand Prix in Jacarepaguá , when he finished seventh behind the Argentinean Carlos Reutemann in a Ferrari .
In the first season in 1975, Emerson Fittipaldi started for McLaren , while his brother Wilson drove for the jointly founded team. Wilson Fittipaldi's best placement was 10th at the US Grand Prix . After this race, the older of the two brothers ended his Formula 1 career.
From the 1976 season to the US Grand Prix in 1980 , Emerson Fittipaldi drove for the Fittipaldi team. Other Fittipaldi drivers were the Italian Arturo Merzario , the Brazilians Ingo Hoffmann , Alex Ribeiro and Chico Serra as well as the Finn Keke Rosberg .
At the end of the 1979 season, the Fittipaldi team acquired the remains of the Walter Wolf Racing team, which had left Formula 1, and relocated to their old factory in Reading so that they could operate from European soil from now on. In the first few years, Brazil had proven to be a considerable disadvantage in terms of location despite the team's assertions to the contrary.
