The 1980 World Automobile Championship was the 31st season of the World Automobile Championship, which is now known as the Formula 1 World Championship . Over 14 races between January 13, 1980 and October 5, 1980, the Drivers World Championship and the International Cup of Formula 1 Constructors were held. It was the last year the series was called the World Automobile Championship.
At the beginning of June, the dispute between FISA and FOCA over the regulations that would apply from the following year escalated . The drivers of the FOCA teams were banned for the Spanish Grand Prix and Bernie Ecclestone , chairman of the FOCA, countered again with the threat of a boycott. Finally, the King of Spain Juan Carlos personally urged the organizers to continue the event, which then banned the FISA teams from the event. The FOCA teams contested the race alone. As a result, FISA President Jean-Marie Balestre declared the run as a pirate race and not counted it for the World Cup .
Alan Jones won the drivers' championship for the first time. Williams became world constructors champions for the first time.
