The 1980 US Grand Prix took place on October 5th as the 14th and final race of the 1980 World Automobile Championship in Watkins Glen.
Reports
background
The season finale at Watkins Glen took place just a week after the Canadian Grand Prix , in which Alan Jones secured his world title.
Jean-Pierre Jabouille was absent due to leg injuries sustained in his accident in Montreal , whereupon the Renault factory team started with just one vehicle.
Instead of Kevin Cogan , Geoff Lees took over the second customer Williams of the RAM team, which registered the car here as Rainbow Jeans Racing .
training
Bruno Giacomelli surprised the professional world with the fastest training lap, which meant the first and only pole position of his Grand Prix career for him. Nelson Piquet followed before Carlos Reutemann and Elio de Angelis . World champion Alan Jones formed the third row on the grid together with René Arnoux .
Due to a headache after an accident, Alain Prost , who had qualified for 13th position, decided not to take part in the race, so Ensign driver Jan Lammers moved up into the starting field.
run
While Giacomelli converted his pole position into a lead, his pursuers Alan Jones, Andrea de Cesaris and René Arnoux missed the braking point of the first corner and had to avoid the gravel trap. This put Piquet in second place ahead of Reutemann.
By the 23rd lap, Jones, who had fallen back to twelfth place due to the mishap at the beginning, had fought his way back to fifth. Under pressure from Reutemann, Piquet made a mistake on lap 25 and spun out. As a result, Jones initially came in fourth. On lap 28 he overtook Didier Pironi and two laps later his team-mate Reutemann. When Giacomelli, who was still in the lead, retired on the 32nd lap due to a technical defect, the new world champion took over the top position and ended a very successful year for him with his fifth win of the season.
Mario Andretti , the world champion of the 1978 season , scored his first and therefore only world championship point in 1980 in sixth place. Jody Scheckter , who had only been replaced as reigning world champion the week before, achieved this in eleventh place in his last Formula 1 race Target. With a total of only two World Cup points, he was 19th and third from bottom of the World Cup table. His Ferrari team only achieved tenth place overall in the constructors' championship with just eight points.
