Buford is a city in Gwinnett and Hall Counties in the US state of Georgia with 12,225 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Buford is located approximately 10 km north of Lawrenceville and approximately 40 km northeast of Atlanta . The city borders in the north on Lake Lanier , which is traversed by the Chattahoochee River .

history

The name of the city comes from Algernon Sidney Buford, a president of the Atlanta and Richmond Air-Line Railway , which built the connection from Atlanta to the north towards South Carolina , North Carolina and Virginia here in 1871 .

Originally, Buford was Cherokee Territory, which was ceded in 1817 as part of a treaty with the United States. Nevertheless, the Indian population predominated until the second half of the 19th century. After completion of the railway, Buford was founded as a town on August 24, 1872, and finally changed to the City of Buford in 1896.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 12,225 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 4,425 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.74 people per household. There are a total of 5,096 households.

67.2% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.35 persons. There were children under the age of 18 in 38.7% of all households and persons aged 65 or over in 28.3% of all households.

30.3% of the population were younger than 20 years, 26.5% were 20 to 39 years old, 25.5% were 40 to 59 years old, and 17.7% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 35 years. 48.9% of the population were male and 51.1% were female.

65.8% of the population identified themselves as whites , 13.8% as African American , 0.3% as Indians and 2.9% as Asian Americans . 14.7% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.5% to several ethnic groups. 25.5% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

The average annual income per household was 51,463 USD , while 15.1% of the population lived below the poverty line.
